“Legal Orders” and Trump’s Military
Authoritarians don’t take power by openly flouting the law. They look for pretexts and legal theories.

I wrote a little about some of the little details you might have missed in this video and why it hit me so hard as a trans person this morning:

Also: if you work for ICE, even if you’re not one of the ones arresting citizens or tackling 15-year-olds or zip-tying kids together and segregating them by race, you’re part of the mechanism making it happen, and you should suffer long-term social and post-regime-change consequences.

Some weirdo on Twitter has been absolutely melting down for like 36 straight hours because I posted:

When this is over, do not forget what ICE did, and what ICE is. And do not make room for them in society. Make sure they know that they are, and will continue to be, reviled and beneath contempt.

This video of Chicagoans intervening to save a man from being abducted off the streets by ICE is making the rounds on Instagram.

Community action works.

As I've said before, FDA recalls are broad for even the suspicion of contamination. This is what they're supposed to do and it's a thankless task. The goal isn't to terrify people, but you need those things off the shelf.

I'm glad Paris put this round up together for folks. Been waiting for it.

after the 10th radioactive shrimp recall in 7 weeks, i decided to do some digging

little did i know it would lead me to an underreported industrial accident that may have released an airborne plume of radioactive debris over swaths of indonesia

Here’s the latest on how shrimp and spices got contaminated with cesium-137, how the FDA has responded, and why consumers should not panic.

And every chance an average person gets to exercise their resisting authoritarianism and community self-defense muscles is one more person who can go out there and inspire and teach other people how to do it too.

Yes, the underlying reason for the need for this is horrifying, stipulated, but watching so many people stand up and defend their neighbors and their community is a heartening reminder that the people who suck are not the majority even if they are the power

Was just at a neighborhood school at dismissal. Hundreds of people with whistles surrounding the school and stationed down every block making sure ICE doesn’t snatch anyone. The same is happening at all the schools around here. I love my neighborhood and I love Chicago.

But in case you missed it, Fr Dowling's statement takes the time to make it explicit: "Father, forgive the ones who do not know what they are doing. Have mercy on the souls of those who know exactly what they're doing."

For any Catholic, the sight of a Eucharistic Procession being turned away at the gates of the destination is the embodiment of Jesus being denied entrance. You don't have to be Catholic to get the symbolism in that!

What Fr Dowling is doing here was not just "offering communion to detainees". A full on Eucharistic Procession is a really fucking big deal. In Catholic theological framing, those folks were the honor guard with the very great privilege of escorting Jesus himself to the detention center.

These days, there will usually be specific times where a church is open for eucharistic adoration, because there are rules about how many people have to be present, etc. Unless you live in a big city, it is often hard to find a convenient adoration time!

Eucharistic adoration is a form of meditation and reflection. It was common in medieval times for priests to bear the monstrance through the streets regularly so people could have the opportunity to adore the sacrament, but that kind of processional is uncommon today.

The monstrance (from the Latin "monstrare", "to show") is the vessel that holds the consecrated Eucharist for adoration, and while it holds the consecrated Eucharist, it becomes the actual presence of Jesus. One does not worship the monstrance itself, but the presence it houses.

It's always good to see priests who still remember there are *seven* Catholic social principles. Also, that noise you hear is the USCCB screeching to the Vatican and getting back nothing, lol

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

I am struck by how lack of standing seems to so frequently evade court challenge to unconstitutional government actions.

It's an odd thing missing, given that this problem was solved in ancient Athens: for certain matters the entire citizen body ('ho boulomenos,' 'whoever wishes') had standing.
