NIH cuts save $9-10B short-term, but they’re killing 202K jobs & $46B in red-state economies (TX, FL, OH). $8T healthcare disaster loom, no cancer/Alzheimer’s cures, pricier drugs. Scientists fleeing to China? Bad deal. Fight for NIH!

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Check out some compelling and timely work by @nasiametoki.bsky.social on sex vs gender differences in the developing adolescent brain!
nasiametoki.bsky.social
Is resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC), cortical thickness (CT), or cortical volume more effective at capturing sex and gender differences in the brains of preadolescents?

Check out our new article (doi.org/10.1016/j.dc...) now out in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience.

New preprint alert!

We used connectome-based predictive modeling in a transdiagnostic sample to identify brain network correlates of wide array of behavioral measures. We also identify where networks supporting cognition overlap with those linked to diagnostically related clinical symptomatology.

More NIH chaos.

NICHD, NIMHD and NIAID Directors are all dismissed.

Jeanne Marrazzo, director of NIAID, claimed that the Trump Administration’s actions
endangered research subjects, defied court orders & undermined vaccine research.

Earlier, Kennedy fired Susan Monarez of the CDC.

Resisting unethical policies costs you.

🧵1/3 Excited for my recent 🧪research out at @jclinical-invest.bsky.social! At @yaleschoolofmed.bsky.social Anesthesiology, we manipulated coupling between brain (cerebrospinal fluid🧠💧[CSF]) and cervical lymph vessels. We saw age-based drainage changes, ⬆️📈neuroinflammation and ⬇️📉brain homeostasis.

How does impaired lymphatic drainage affect cerebral homeostasis?

Helene Benveniste & team use dynamic CE-MRI and computational fluid dynamics in a rat model of mechanical stress to deep cervical lymph nodes, revealing the brain’s adaptive response.

From an NIH source:

"The fact that it’s 8am on the day of a likely shutdown, and NIH personnel have received not one word about it from our leaders, from HHS, or higher, is gobsmacking.

Normally we receive shutdown preparations emails starting days in advance. Absolute silence except at IC level."

Staff members at the NIH seem to have done the impossible: spend the agency's $48 billion budget.
