"free indirect discourse" is an absolutely terrible phrase to describe one of the most important features of prose fiction and we should have found a new term decades ago

Government workers 👇🏾
Lunch is on the house:

Being in the heart of downtown DC, we love that so many of our Federal employees stop by during lunch for a Donburi at China Chilcano or a Fútbol Club at Jaleo. And just because the government is shut down doesn't mean you have to miss out on your favorite lunch spot- because this time, its on us!
Join us for lunch from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM at any of our participating restaurants and enjoy a free lunch item when you present your government ID-you heard that right! Dine in with us Monday through Friday and choose your favorite: a sandwich at Jaleo, a donburi at China Chilcano, a wrap or pita at Zaytinya, or a torta at Oyamel.
We've always believed in serving our community with open arms and good food-no shutdown can stop that.

Special education isn't a "nice thing to have." It isn't "charity" or doing something to make us feel better. It is a right. The right to a Free Appropriate Public Education is codified in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, signed by a Republican president.

Police officers who publicly declare that they’ll quit if a mayoral candidate they dislike wins the election are (1) usually bluffing—sure buddy, toss away that paycheck and pension—and (2) exactly the sort of cops cities would be better off without, ones who don’t see themselves as public servants.

On this #IndigenousPeoplesDay I'd like to draw attention to the western #Alaska storm that is causing whole houses to float away into waters that will make you hypothermic in no time, especially around the town of Kotzebue. The latest on Fbook says the Coast Guard is there now.

There is a major storm with high winds causing severe flooding on SW Alaska near the Bering Sea and the Yukon Delta. This follows severe flooding in NW Alaska in Kotzebue earlier this week. A lot of native villages are going to need a lot of help and you know it's not coming from the feds.

FB reports of major flood damage in Kipnuk - homes and store floating, people swimming.
Very high water in Quinhagak as well.

Step 1: disband ICE
Step 2: give ICE's entire bloated budget to the IRS
Step 3: record white collar crime task force kicking in penthouse doors and macing unresisting billionaires
Step 4: one hundred years of Dem reign

This is happening right now, to a friend of mine in Chicago. This is a peaceful area, with no previous unrest or crime problem. Just people trying to live their lives. My heart hurts. They're having conversations no family should have to have.
A white box with text. "Y'all. They're tear gassing my neighborhood. Right by the place we get hummus from. Right by where we get the extra large pizzas for sleep overs. Tell your people."

Whistling when ICE is about to kidnap someone for no reason is incredibly effective. They know what they are doing is wrong and will scatter in the wind when too many witnesses gather.

Pleasant day out in my neighborhood in Chicago. There was a farmer’s market and people are out strolling, chatting, and sitting out on porches. Just like every weekend.

Except now most of us are wearing whistles to alert neighbors if unidentified guys in tactical gear show up to kidnap people.

I truly believe a big reason why Democrats are failing to appropriately respond to the moment is a pathological refusal to admit that there were aspects of the American status quo pre trump that were extremely fucked up and unjust

I saw Annie Hall in Bryant Park with friends when I was weighing a potential LA job offer and on the cusp of interviewing for a job in New York, and few things made the decision feel clearer than that.
thehighsign.bsky.social
I swear that 3/4 of the reason I live in NYC as an adult is Annie Hall. I had the poster on my wall. I saw Reds in the theater probably 5 times the year it came out and owned the soundtrack. Diane Keaton was my dream alter ego as a teen.
emilynussbaum.bsky.social
Oh man, I loved Diane Keaton— Annie Hall had such a huge influence on me as a teen, everything about her style & her energy, the clothes she wore & the way she talked! She just felt like such a model of New York City intellectual life, jittery & adventurous & original

These guys have gotten incredibly rich by fleecing the government with subpar tech that was designed for rentseeking rather than performance. A smart Dem agenda item would be to build internal tech capacity. The fact that it would punish these guys is just a silver lining.

Traveling halfway across the world & packing into a room for a conference panel on the theme of resisting eugenics.

But not wearing a respirator during a surge in the ongoing pandemic.

What a fun way to show how the research & scholars you’re there to ostensibly listen to mean jack shit to you.

international students typically pay for domestic students. they aren't taking slots, they're expanding the pie. unless you're talking about the handful of universities that account for like 1% or whatever of college enrollment.
larryglickman.bsky.social
3) I don't see the evidence that domestic students are being "crowded out" by international students. There are many excellent private and public universities desperate to increase (or even maintain) the size of their student bodies. The idea that there is not room for all rings false to me.
