Finally closed my Spotify account. Good riddance.

The Business School at St Andrews has posted a nice piece about the Master of Public Policy Programme. Not my favorite picture, tbh, but a few good quotes from yours truly. Econ graduates should also find the programme to be of interest.

@corinnelow.com and Imran Rasul will give keynote addresses and Adeline Delavande will give the Presidential Address. I'm the program chair.

Looking forward to seeing you in Helsinki!

Four weeks & a day left to submit a paper to the fantastic European Society for Population Economics meetings in Helsinki, 11-13 June 2026. ESPE is a friendly and useful place to present, with great social events.

Good morning, Pittenweem!

well, 2026 is off to a great start. unfathomable.

Good morning, Crail!

Prof Steve Machin (LSE) will give the keynote.

And at £400 for two nights accommodation and all meals, it's a bargain! @nilsbraakmann.bsky.social , @lindseymacmillan.bsky.social , and I are the program committee, and we're all nice people. So why not submit today?

Your marking is done. Family visits are over. The excesses of New Year's Eve have been salved w/ aspirin and sleep. Next semester hasn't started yet. Thus... the perfect time to submit a paper to the Fifth Annual SaNE in Applied Microeconomics!

Happy New Year, Crail! Frohes neues Jahr!

Happy New Year‘s Eve, Crail! Here’s to a great 2025 and an even better 2026! Guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr!

If there was a test involving the unobservables, I think it would be different.

Because it’s about unobservables, with no direct test statistic, unlike weak instruments and finite sample bias.

Where was his contract offer? This rings so hollow. Stearns and his smug demeanor sickens me.

Bourbon?

This is just awful. Something is wrong somewhere (Stearns, Mendoza, Cohen's willingness to invest, Soto, whoever). Time to fix it.

And now he's your closer. Thanks for nothing.

Why not take a break from marking and submit a paper to the Fifth Annual SaNE Conference in Applied Microeconomics?
5-7 May 26 at Crieff Hydro in Perthshire. Prof Steve Machin will give the keynote.

Submissions are welcome from everywhere, and the deadline is 31 January 2026 (but why wait?)
