It’s the same when love comes to an end, or the marriage fails and people say they knew it was a mistake, that everybody said it would never work. That she was old enough to know better. But anything worth doing is worth doing badly. Like being there by that summer ocean on the other side of the island while love was fading out of her, the stars burning so extravagantly those nights that anyone could tell you they would never last. Every morning she was asleep in my bed like a visitation, the gentleness in her like antelope standing in the dawn mist. Each afternoon I watched her coming back through the hot stony field after swimming, the sea light behind her and the huge sky on the other side of that. Listened to her while we ate lunch. How can they say the marriage failed? Like the people who came back from Provence (when it was Provence) and said it was pretty but the food was greasy. I believe Icarus was not failing as he fell, but just coming to the end of his triumph.

#FindsFriday This bronze helmet was found in a field near Falaise in northern France in the 1820s

It dates to the late Bronze Age, around 1100-900BC, and was part of a cache of 10 helmets!

What could have prompted someone to bury all these? 👀

The costumes serve the function of masking the violent extremism to make the direct action appear like a family-friendly gathering on camera, and to whitewash the past ultraviolence. In 2019, Antifa devised a similar plot by giving out free "milkshakes" at a protest. But they couldn't contain their bloodthirst and nearly killed me when they saw me. Honestly I was probably just latently pissed off because it feels like every material victory, for staff and students alike, is immediately followed by backlash and culture war bullshit and disastrous cost cutting.

And leadership is trying to dodge accountability.

It's tiring.

Sorry if that post was a bit reductive, my (or rather, my wife's, I escaped to the private pharmaceutical sector) experience in academia has been one of deep frustration.

I was a bit flippant in phrasing it, but I'm pretty sure you can't explain the incidences of corruption and exploitation (we have a whole thing going on where people are fighting against being strung along by many, sometimes dozens of, consecutive short-term contracts) without politics-brain.

At least here in Germany (outside smaller local colleges), these positions are in and of themselves very political and you need an extremely good network to even be considered for one. It's incredibly rare that a person arrives on that seat without knowing several guys in politics.

The most important lesson I learned getting my degree: University leaders are (in contrast to most staff) not academics, passionate teachers or inquisitive minds looking to improve our collective knowledge base, they are politicians (derogatory), and you must fight them like politicians.
