Software is a tool, and tools should serve the user above all else.

let the version of the industry that does this repent through bankruptcy; if I pay for technology I expect it to serve *my* interests, not those who wish to control and surveill me

I would rather the US had just paid corn farmers to go away directly rather than going in on the utter waste that is ethanol fuel.

It’s 2050 and a teen girl is torrenting a .tar.gz file of all the consciousnesses of all the tech bros who uploaded themselves into the cloud in a bid for immortality and modding them into The Sims 4

No “clean CR” exists when Trump defies Congress and unilaterally guts programs—from law enforcement to pediatric cancer research to clean energy projects.

Republicans want Democratic cover to keep breaking the law. Democrats won’t play along.

So if Russ Vought and Bob Kennedy were deliberately trying on behalf of an enemy to sicken and kill Americans by destroying the public health structure - what would they be doing differently?

no, the idea that America is the root of all evil in the world, or that Americans are uniquely greedy or whiny or materialistic or whatever, these are other ways of calling America exceptional. so much of the fringe left is just fixated on America in the mirror image of the way MAGA is

Inconvenience is the price we pay for community and a major reason there are so few secular alternatives to religious communities is it’s hard to justify that price in secular terms

I feel lots of things that felt like, were billed as, self-actualization read in retrospect as canaries in the coal mine for the fraying commitments we owe to each other as members of a society.

Relatedly, I recall a lot of "the joy of canceling plans" jokes and memes from the 2010s and now folks are talking about a loneliness epidemic, and, well...

Apollo 13 and The Martian are movies that depict the same thing, both as fiction and as historical retelling: that we *can* come together as a people for a common purpose. It’s up to us to *do so*, to reject the idea so prevalent across the political spectrum, that we only owe anything to ourselves.

Right. Just like... definitionally a game should feel like it takes place in a setting where the game happens. You can make a gritty, street level Batman game. But if you make it so broken ribs, concussions, and guns work 100% like real life, it becomes unimmersive for Batman to exist at all.

More judges speak to the press (the NYT) about what a disaster the Supreme Court (specifically the shadow docket) has been - “incredibly demoralizing & troubling”; a “judicial crisis”; a “slap in the face to district courts.” www.nytimes.com/2025/10/11/u...

Philanthropy is far from a perfect model — ideally you tax people enough to fund stuff without having to rely on generosity.

But the billionaires of today sit on their dragon gold piles so much.

I live in ATL. Much of what makes this city great started with Woodruff handing out checks like candy.

Imagine how unmaintainably complex an automobile would be if all you needed to do was press a magic "duplicate" button. Every single screw and bolt and nut and filter and bearing would be made to requirements instead of pulled from a standard parts catalog. To some extent this has already happened.

The world needs less software. More common platforms, more shared code, less code shipped to end users, less UI churn. AI coding tools all work contrary to those goals.

Most enterprise software should be replaced with open source packages developed by consortiums.

My gripe is that mostly the world needs less code written more thoughtfully, not more code written less thoughtfully.

“Emotional labor” itself morphing from a specific term related to the service industry into a term referring to emotional attachment and investment within personal relationships was a bad development.
