Yeah we've fully normalized being a "nerd" or a "geek," but in the 1980s, it was one of the worst things you could be. It didn't mean "quirky person who enjoys franchises." They used it like we use "incel" today.

I honestly don't think people have processed how much less genre stuff there used to be. Like there wasn't enough stuff for Starlog or Fangoria to have "new" thing to put the cover every month. So you'd still see BSG or Classic Trek or even Universal Monsters covers in the mid 80s.

This is true but also NO GENRE THINGS that weren't Star Wars were, both because there was so much less genre material and because things that are just normal things now were subject to full on moral panics in the 80s (e.g. there was a is D&D satanic! segment on 60 minutes ffs).

Though The Thing was far from “unknown,” as an 80s kid, I’d like to note that it was definitely not at the popularity level you’d think of now, even on a cult level yet, even as every other new movie set in the 80s puts a poster for The Thing on the wall of one of the kids or teen characters.
