A note (because it’s too long for the bio) that I don’t do hashtags, auto follow-backs, or redundant pile-ons.

Just random observations on media and gestures to cool stuff, with the occasional musings on HE and (if the glass has been broken) politics.

Bringing back Web 0.1.

Tbf, it was a short 80 minute flight and longer would have frayed more. But still, I tip my hat to that feral energy.

An omen early on: when we taxied out, the flight attendant asked us to lower our shades and “enjoy the nap.” A sharp high-pitched voice a couple rows behind me declared “I don’t take naps.”

That’s damn right: Fight the power, girl, fight the power.

Pure, distilled 8-10 year-old DGAF energy. Not quietly buried in screens, but loudly bouncing off each other. Glad to hear poopy and peepee material is still de rigeur in 3rd grade.

I say this with respect, admiration, and honestly only a little annoyance: those were the loudest fucking kids I’ve ever been around on a flight.

every big AI pitch is like “what if we took away your means of survival and devalued all your skills to make stonks go up temporarily? You’d like that wouldn’t you?”

Off to a week in New Mexico in the fall. Looking forward to cooler days and nights, desert and mountain air, lots of crunchy leaves, and as always, fantastic food.

Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world,... I feel like I can't take it. And my heart is just going to cave in.

If you’re lucky, your best local stations might actually do some solid work on occasion. But national broadcast news has been toxic for decades. Yes, this includes NPR.

American broadcast journalism has utterly failed and is a dead industry, there's nothing left worth saving

"It would be powerful if folks from Dallas stand up for Chicago and folks from Chicago stand up for Dallas, so that narratives like 'Texas invades Illinois' can't take hold. Cities are not invading each other. The federal government is attacking Americans."

Every Doctor Who fan of a certain age has, upon their bookshelves, a dozen or so books published across four decades, each containing different essays on the virtues and vices of “The Hand of Fear” (and every other story broadcast since 1963).

TBH, I went into this profession believing there would be a lot more overlap between "reading books" and "being an English professor" than there actually is. Sending emails, managing spreadsheets, handing tissues to weeping people: yes. Reading books, or substantial portions thereof, not so much.

Evening viewing recommendation? Watch A BETTER TOMORROW (1986) on our Hong Kong Action Classics collection! The box-office sensation that established director John Woo as the king of 1980s Hong Kong action cinema and set the standard for the heroic bloodshed genre.

Yep. And as I know you know, "fretting about other people's media consumption" goes way, way, way back further than the last 10 years. All the way back to the foundations of the field.

So thrilled, my Nashville book has arrived! You can order it here: www.bloomsbury.com/us/nashville... It's still 2025, so not too late for 50 year anniversary screenings. Need a guest speaker? "Let me be the one!"

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.
