I think it's maybe a little too easy to overcorrect on this stuff and totally dismiss anyone's concerns about autism. This is a fantastic article/video that takes concerns seriously and answers a lot of questions while laying out exactly how unserious the WH's current approach to ASD is.

Which of course faces its own political framing issue, but IMO the opposition to explicit transfer payments comes from a very different place than the opposition to explicit additional taxes on specific choices, even if they net out to the same thing (and also the same as neutral rates w/ credits)

What policy wonk wants to ditch tax credits in favor of explicitly differential tax rates? I thought the naive economist view was just to administer your welfare and subsidies as separate programs (or through the SSA) and take them out of the tax code entirely?

This is such an underappreciated point. So much of the genuine magic of markets is blunted, and indeed perverted to produce suffering rather than flourishing, when the demand curve is defined by *ability* to pay rather than *willingness* to pay.

A fun little corollary is that the resource allocation role that economists get rightly hot and bothered about markets being able to solve works better the more broadly the purchasing power is spread out. That means confiscatory taxes and redistribution.

TL;DR true capitalism has never been tried.
