Left: In a desperate effort to find reasonable use case, OpenAI is running ads during the baseball playoffs about how you can use ChatGPT to plan a road trip. www.youtube.com/watch?v=go4o...

Right: What happens if you actually do that. www.bbc.com/news/article...
Open AI commercial about using ChatGPT to plan a road trip Hannah Read, 37, tried to use an AI chatbot to plan a trip to Norway with her partner and three children.

She wanted to drive from her home in Flintshire, north Wales and cross the North Sea by ferry.

"I thought it might make for a nice drive," Hannah says. "I asked ChatGPT if there was a ferry from the UK to Norway and it said there was one from Newcastle to Bergen."

She later checked a ferry travel website but found no such route exists.

A travel blog detailing how Brits can reach Norway says the last time the route operated was in 2008.

"I did feel a bit disappointed when I found out the information on ChatGPT was incorrect, as I'd got quite excited and had started planning the trip in my head," Hannah adds.

"My advice is don't rely on AI 100%, it's better to still do proper research."

Per CDC source: At internal leadership meeting this afternoon, it was shared that 1,257 people were RIF'd at CDC. Number may not be final. Apparently, chief of staff was unaware that RIFs were going to occur so not clear who is making decisions. (Short 🧵)

The agency where I volunteer used to serve migrants. But now our food pantry is open for… military families who are not getting paid and need food!

Tens of millions of people have died from Covid.

Every country should have responded with record investments in public health infrastructure.

Instead the US government is putting us all at greater risk of more catastrophes by firing hundreds of top scientists whose job is to prevent outbreaks.

It’s not too late to wear a mask.

It’s not too late to protect your health.

It’s not too late to show you care about the health of those around you.

It’s not too late to do your part to make public spaces inclusive & accessible.

It’s radical kindness & community care.

It is not "attribution and sourcing" to generate post-hoc citations that have not been read and did not inform the student's writing. Those should be regarded as fraudulent: artifacts testifying to human actions and thought that did not occur.

For help with attribution and sourcing, Grammarly is releasing a citation finder agent that automatically generates correctly formatted citations backing up claims in a piece of writing, and an expert review agent that provides personalized, topic-specific feedback. Does your university have a contract with Grammarly? Write to the decision-maker asking if they think the university should be paying for a tool that is fast integrating features that can only be used for academic misconduct and cognitive offloading and request they drop the contract.

I can't get over how the CDC layoffs are coming less than two months after the attempted mass shooting. The agency is being taken apart brick by brick. The public servants there do not deserve this.

we have to understand that girls are in severe danger of sexual violence from anonymous ICE goons

Also @melissagayle.bsky.social how did I not know that Abe Polonsky's full name was Abraham Lincoln Polonsky?!
drsepinwall.bsky.social
Glad it's of interest. Rosenstone is one of my biggest inspirations in writing about film and he is also a helluva writer in addition to being brilliant. And now I'm in a big rabbit hole in the same issue of Cineaste about Abe Polonsky. Albert Maltz & the blacklist! So thanks for the prompt😁.

I need to remember this later - the studios were already mad at John Garfield because he broke away from the studio system to start his own company - and POOF, let's sacrifice him to HUAC.🤬
Text: Cineaste: This was at the time of HUAC? Polonsky: Yes. I was very aware of the hearings and involved with them. I was also writing a book. I was young and busy. But that’s how Force of Evil got made. The title was provided by Einfeld. It’s a pretty good title. The very good casting in the picture was not my work in the main—I knew too little about it. Garfield was a major star. The studios hated him because he broke away and when Body and Soul got nominated for several Academy Awards [Garfield was nominated as Best Actor and Polonsky for Best Original Screenplay], they formed a team so we wouldn’t win anything!

(but this line by that author is giving me pause!

"Today I might stand up a bit for Rossen (or Kazan, for that matter), or push [Polonsky] more on his evolving view of the Soviet Union; but that’s water under the bridge."

😬☠️

How anyone could work on blacklistees & stand up for Rossen??)
