I think the technocratic thing is cool (I was a Clinton fan lol) but it just doesn't make sense when you lose the theoretical basis for your government. Nobody cares how well-run the boiler room is in a sinking ship. The message has to shift completely now and not turn back.

It didn't really occur to me until this year just how much lawmaking has ground to a halt. The Republican stall-game of Clinton and especially Obama became a kind of new status quo under Biden, and Republicans never had legislative ambitions. It's like they aren't even legislators.

I guess the ADA was fairly radical, maybe we should see the state level movements to legalize gay marriage as a specifically Democratic phenomenon in the same way we see anti-abortion as Republican. Still, it just doesn't feel like Democrats have major ambitions, it never felt that way to me.

I've come to the realization that Democrats are basically the conservative party, in the institutional sense, and have been since the Civil Rights era. The ERA was the last real attempt to redefine the status quo in this country, Obergefell was a SCOTUS decision and not legislation.

The path of escalation is basically this: ICE gets more aggressive, locals retaliate, National Guard is legally sent in, locals retaliate, govt. declares martial law. If this was their intent I don't think they'd be doing anything differently.

The voluntary illiteracy of executive decision-makers is an underrated part of how we got here.

Information comes through to them by meetings instead of written reports (which they seldom read much, if any, of), and they operate chiefly on rumor and vibe rather than any sort of hard info.
