Indeed - Lucy Powell (winner) got slightly more first pref votes today than Richard Burgon (3rd place) got in 2020 - and less than half the total Angela Rayner got then.
Powell’s election is a sign of the disillusionment of Labour members - but there is a much much bigger and more worrying sign.

Turn out was just 16%
BREAKING: Lucy Powell is elected Labour’s deputy leader

Yay. Priceless. The right column at the right time. And a gleefully English two fingers to the haters.

V late to this (it’s a weekend, family stuff, etc) but..I agree with Ben. Both Katie Lam’s interview about deporting people with legal status (and the way STimes treated it) & the Christian Calgie business are disturbing egs of forgetting that ‘normal on X these days’ is very much not normal
Apropos of nothing, I really do think UK journalists and politicians need some reminding that mass deportation of LEGAL immigrants, particularly those with permanent status, is far more extreme than even Trump's America and would basically place Britain completely on its own among democracies.

Nigel Farage has gone "on strike" from PMQs, saying he won't return until he next gets a question

There's just one problem: Reform UK knows the rota for qus for the rest of the year.

His next question is on Nov 12

From the extracts in this thread, this was a very good speech by Mamdani.
Absolute hero 💪💯
Mamdani: "But there is one thing that I will change: I will no longer look for myself in the shadows. I will find myself in the light."

Mamdani: "There are 12 days remaining until Election Day. I will be a Muslim man in NYC each of those 12 days and every day that follows after that. I will not change who I am, how I eat, or the faith that I am proud to call my own."

It happened again last night.

Right wing media before polls closed: Reform will win 7/7 byelections!

Right wing media after LibDems won 4/7 by-elections & Reform won 1: 🤐

I would hope that one of the many MPs who benefits from Sunder's tireless work would take up this case - the defamatory video needs removing urgently, and the person responsible needs to be found and held accountable

Oh look.
The Green Party's proposal for a wealth tax on 1% of assets above £10m and 2% on assets above £1bn comes top of our list of tax reforms that Britons would support, with 75% giving it their backing

Fascinating that both of these people were considered on the "soft" centre-right of the Tory Party not so long ago.
Sounds more like a Radnorshire accent, definitely not a valleys accent.

From this graph, looks like the combined r-wing vote in 2025 is almost exactly the same as in 2016 (purple blob UKIP). Two pole British politics has been with us for a while.

For those keeping track, it's now three days since I asked the Conservatives for (fairly basic) details of their policy on revoking indefinite leave to remain, eg whether it would include separating families and if it would work as per Chris Philp's draft bill. Despite several reminders: nothing.
