Q: Politico reported on a group chat of young Republicans. Does this just reflect some bad apples?

HOCHUL: Some bad apples? These are the future of the GOP. This is so vile it's hard to find the words to put into context ... there's gotta be consequences ... this bullshit has to stop.

Beyond that, yeah I’m sure they’re also really ‘mitigating’ mental health issues….

Like flirty AI bots aren’t an avenue to new and different forms of mental health issues and co-dependency.

Sam Altman went from “AI will cure cancer" to "ChatGPT porn" in less than a month
ChatGPT boss predicts when AI could cure cancer We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.

i am unfortunately increasingly inclined to say we should look to the invention of the printing press and the centuries of disorder and chaos and dysfunction that followed its introduction until people and the system eventually adjusted to a new reality where ppl could read nonsense & believe it

I don't see how we can have a democracy when about one-third of our country's population is COMPLETELY psychotic and detached from reality. I mean that literally and in reference to many of my family members: they flat-out reject the real world and the very concept of evidence.
godzillionaire.bsky.social
This has always been the closest analogy- because it’s a much larger break w continuity than radio/tv/film, which sort of modified what already existed through papers and mags. though you can see how those worked w the rise of fascism in the 20s-30’s as similar to some of what’s happening now.

The difference bet the way the press handled Biden’s vs Trump’s health issues, as well as the standard to which they hold his conduct is one of the greatest scandals in the history of journalism.

Their conduct, and the knowledge they’ve done tremendous damage to their profession, should shame them.

if we are going to have a supreme court that is as powerful as it is, i basically think justices should be forbidden from public comment on their work as well as any supplemental source of income while they are on the bench. (they should also ride circuit again but that's a bit separate.)
andycraig.bsky.social
The substance of what she's saying is bad and unconvincing, but more fundamentally, I really don't think Supreme Court justices should be going on book tours where they publicly comment on their work and respond to criticism of it. Either put it in a written opinion or hold your peace.

Glad they put this in the article, but we’re at a point in the evolution of “view from
nowhere” when they can’t state a fact about math without referring to some outside expertise!

Is it not ‘objective journalism’ to just write ‘this is mathematically impossible’?

He’s talking about the afterlife again….you can’t convince me the man isn’t dying. This is the weirdest and somehow most self reflective train of thought he’s spouted in his decades in the public eye, and he’s said multiple things along these lines the past few months.

As they state here, 99% of what this admin is doing could be negated or limited if Congress would assert its own authority. Even with GOP majorities, they should want to use their own power, and are clearly cowed, scared, or too lazy to do it.

It's a pretty big deal that the NYC Bar Association--one of the most prominent and respected bar associations in the country--is accusing the President of ordering the "unlawful summary execution," i.e. murder--of civilians in violation of US and international law. www.nycbar.org/press-releas...

Jake Tapper did a whole interview with Trump by text message? Which means he can't actually confirm it was him. And now everyone's asking even more than before very reasonable questions about the wannabe dictator's health.

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/a...
The CNN anchor did not explain how he verified that it was the president — not any of his aides — who authored the written responses to his questions.

He also did not explain whether he’d made any effort to speak with the president by phone, something that has become commonplace for reporters covering the second Trump administration because Trump has maintained use of his personal mobile phone since returning to the presidency and frequently uses it to contact reporters directly.

The president’s purported text message exchange with Tapper was also unusual because Trump is not known to be a frequent user of his phone’s text message capacity.

He also famously eschews email and other written forms of communication and during his first term he openly complained when attorneys working for his administration took notes during meetings.

Trump’s unconventional use of text-based communications to purportedly respond to Tapper comes as questions continue to swirl about the state of his health

the right accuses us of "Trump Derangement Syndrome" but the thing is that perceiving the Trump administration is like gazing into Yog-Sothoth's eldritch form. The only way not to be deranged by it is to actively refuse to perceive it, which is the right's preferred approach to anything inconvenient

There is a Mishima quote I like using -- "the special quality of hell is to see everything clearly down to the last detail." It seems to be the only way of really conveying the psychic damage of perceiving the administration and the forces behind it

It’s annoying that the trend in black and white thinking and lack of nuance extends all the way through to *academics* who should be the antithesis of that kind of thought.

Painting with a broad brush in either direction is a way to completely misread the past and present!

it’s so clear Ezra has not thought deeply about the experience of black people in this country, the fight for abolition and civil rights and the kinds of resilience and ‘strategy’ it takes to win a fight over decades (or centuries). For all his ‘deep thinking’ he doesn’t appear well read in history

I have been thinking about this for days.

I keep coming back to Ezra Klein's inability to understand Ta-Nehisi Coates' stance that it is worth fighting, even if you don't live to see victory, even if your children never see victory, even if your grandchildren never see victory, it's worth fighting
coloradotravis.bsky.social
Damn, this one was truly fantastic.

Part of why I continue to listen to Klein is that I’m wondering if anyone is gonna call him down on his bullshit and… Ta-Nehisi Coates absolutely does that here.

Without question the best political thought I have heard on the current moment.
