The easiest method to turn weak-minded people against others, to legitimize hurting other people is just simply to lie. We know this works and I've stopped believing people had the wool pulled over their eyes. I think we know exactly the type of person that is comforted by plausible deniability.

This is an old tactic, older even than the 1920s Vance is inventing. After WWI in Canada a strikebreaking tactic was "hey returning soldiers, you don't want to side with the immigrants taking your jobs, right"; the answer from many soldiers was "nice try, shut up" (I'm working on a book about this)

uh-oh. turns out the mortgage document that the DOJ is alleging was fraudulent b/c great niece paid some rent (great niece testified she didn't) refers to "short-term rentals," which seems to blow DOJ theory that it could't be rented out of the water. Another disaster of a case.
