Well, that didn’t go how I hoped it would. To say I’m a little disappointed in the NZ voting public’s decision on Māori wards is an understatement. Here’s a thought about aspiring to the bare minimum (& given our #nitrate problem even that might be too much)
My Stuff #cartoon today #nzpol
Cartoon. Title: “A Traditional Local Body Election Blessing” Image shows a fairy with a wand, dressed in orange, beside a levitating voting box. She’s saying, “May all your municipal dreams come true!” And then, “And if you can’t have that, may your reticulated water be potable”

“Te Tiriti is already written into law. It’s already promised. It should not fall to individual kaiako and kura to hold the line while government policy undermines it.” — Rongopai Kira, tumu whenua (deputy principal) of Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga. #nzpol

In this piece Marli Olive Wesley, a Sāmoan-Fijian American writer and analyst unpacks the appeal of right-wing conservative American figures like Charlie Kirk — and what it reveals about faith, survival, and misplaced allegiance in Pacific communities.

Does the NZ First leader need to tweak his official bio on the ministerial page of the Beehive’s website – and on his party’s site – claiming he’s a former NZ Māori rugby representative?

Ok after an afternoon of results, texts, calls, messages on other apps and emails, I have some thoughts on today’s Local Election results

1) Voter turnout is depressing. 32%ish on average across AoNZ is pathetic.
2) The Māori Wards referendum should never have happened - it was a racebaiting farce…

It has been interesting, COUGH SPLUTTER, seeing these results come out while watching "I'm not racist... But" Episode tonight... (especially Liam Hehir kinda wheedling around a bit on some land-related 'comparisons' before getting a "Uh... see here's the thing" from other panelists, AHEM).

The Olive green areas are councils where citizens voted down Māori wards (the little blue blob in the middle is Kirikiriroa, which voted by a whisker to retain theirs).
Coincidentally those Olive green areas also pretty accurately represent land confiscated by the crown after the Waikato wars.

"Waititi said the government and media had engaged in a "constant attack" on Te Tiriti o Waitangi, pointing to "14 inquiries in the last 18 months into Māori organisations".

"Not a single allegation was upheld... Where are the apologies? That silence speaks volumes."
Te Pāti Māori accuses government, media of 'constant attack' on Treaty of Waitangi

Fixed their bill board for them #nzpol
A picture of a broken ACT party bill board where the faces of David Seymour and Brooke Van Velden have been removed.
The words on the pink bill board originally said "end the wasteful spending. Party Vote ACT"
I changed it to say "End the wasteful spending, Don't party vote ACT"

The coalition government in a nutshell.

I am writing this because it has swiftly become crystal clear to me that many people have no idea what is happening or how this works. Here is a thread for non-academics to put into context what just happened to Dr. Mark Bray, a fellow historian.

God she's a fool. As the debt-holder, and with the debt being something she is talking about selling off, the Chorus debt *is* a bloody government asset. If someone owes you, it's an asset on your balance sheet! This is ACCY101 stuff. Most inept Minister of Finance ever! #nzpol

Was told today about Indigenous people in Brazil who were desperate to vote against Bolsonaro. There were no polling booths in their villages so they got buses to the city, and when the military blocked their buses many miles from the city they got off and walked there. Fight for your vote, always.

I don't think it's more profitable:

It is doing *active political work.*

We are left to speculate why a state-funded broadcaster is doing that work, and why, but it's absolutely doing it. #nzpol

I count five sentences of fluff, just to highlight that:

"the Greens' director of communications... announced he was resigning from his role to take a break..."

Is shitting on the Greens more profitable than actual scandals from the coalition govt?
