ARCUS was important. It jumpstarted careers in science. It amplified voices that have too long been left out of research. It did all that and more for very little money, and now it's gone, arguably when we need it most.

My latest for Sierra:

Such a diversity of fungi in such a short walk. Beazell Memorial Forest is one of my favorite places in Oregon this time of year.

Light yellow mushrooms coming out of a base of rotting wood and leaves. Rows of turkey tail like shelf mushrooms emerging from a decaying log. A large white mushroom with a brown circle in the center of its cap and a ring on its stem, surrounded by green leaves on the forest floor. Small shiny white mushrooms growing out of a pine cone on a leafy forest floor.

They have fired the staff of the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report and 70 Epidemic Intelligence Service officers, who are disease detectives that respond to outbreaks around the world.

I cannot emphasize enough how dangerous it is to dismantle our disease surveillance infrastructure.

This guy's awful racist beliefs aside, "He says his influence is growing" is a criminally bad headline. Just a fireable, professional laughing stock for life, sort of headline.

Spending your time talking to someone who wants to relitigate slavery is definitely a choice you can make

The coming national horror is that if Portland's *truly* minimal level of protest justifies federalizing and deploying troops, they can and will be federalized and deployed anywhere the President wants and whenever he wants.
gabrielmalor.bsky.social
My initial read on this argument: Judge Nelson is eager to disagree with his 9th Cir. colleagues that federalizing the NG is reviewable at all.

He's also eager to disagree with Judge Immergut that the Portland protests were small and under control.

McArthur about the ICE protesters: "these are violent people." Says the president is entitled to say "enough is enough."

Asks for a stay pending appeal. Sits.

Argument is over.

I’m interested in talking to a federal agency scientist who was fired, then rehired. I can keep you anonymous. I’m on Signal ginnyg.04

I'm not curious about the theft machine. I write my poems, I don't delegate, I want the air in South Memphis to be breathable.

there’s this weird idea a lot of people seem to have about how all of us writers and artists must secretly want to use AI and are merely resisting temptation for ethical reasons, and like, no, it’s not hard for me to resist drinking the bowl of Piss With Glass In It actually

As Cascade PBS sunsets its digital-first news operation, we take a look back at some of the stories that exemplify its impact on the region over the past 18 years, first as Crosscut and later as the Cascade PBS newsroom.

with the official IUCN listing for the slender-billed curlew now being Extinct here is the rather sad piece I wrote about what went into this decision

I tried to include everything we know about their behaviour and biology, which is tragically little 🪶🧪

I'll say it again. The media continues to insist that Vought is laying people off because of the shutdown. Did the DOGE firings happen during a shutdown? No, they just did it.

He was always going to do mass firings. See Project 2025. They're just being cute thinking they can blame the Dems.

Picture how big the Hoover Dam is. An absolute unit. The Hoover Dam has a power capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW).

The solar farm that the Admin just cancelled could have produces 6.2 GW of power. That's more than 3 Hoover Dams.

SCOOP: The Bureau of Land Management says the largest solar project in Nevada — the Esmeralda 7 mega-farm — has been canceled

The news was quietly dropped via a sudden website update with no public word from any of the companies involved or a statement from the agency

Esmeralda 7 Solar Project Has Been Canceled, BLM Says
It would have delivered a gargantuan 6.2 gigawatts of power.

Free baseball!

(I hate this. But I don't want the season to be over, so I'll take a chance and at least another ten minutes or so.)

Go Birds. Go Phils. Go Flyers also, sure. Big Philly sports night, and I'm experiencing it mostly as background while I work.

When I pitched this story, it was about the WSU study. Then the Portland announcement happened, and the story got rewritten pretty much from scratch. I don't generally do breaking news - I'd rather be the second wave, slightly digested - but sometimes the news breaks your story anyway.

Emerald ash borers have killed millions of ash trees since they arrived in the US. They made it to Oregon in 2022, British Columbia in 2024 and this year, were detected in Portland. Washington is on alert.

In case you missed it: we are hard at work on a deep dive into how the Trump Administration's policies are affecting biodiversity.

bioGraphic's news editor, @colinschultz.bsky.social, wants to know: what do you, our readers, want to know more about this topic? What questions do you have?

1/ 🧪🍃🐙📰 We @biographic.bsky.social have been hard at work for the past 8 months developing a deep, rich, behind-the-scenes feature story exploring how the Trump Administration's cuts to international conservation are affecting biodiversity on the ground.
