In case you were wondering, yes, this *is* how all libraries work.

This is what happens when you wake up from sleep and a single sentence of the dream stays with you. It's not *my* fault my mind is a terrible place.

(this is what I was gleefully writing before Christmas. I make no claims about its quality, it's a brain dump)

Stock Disposal
The boy groaned in frustration. One vigorous but misaimed kick and his football had flown completely off course, soaring beautifully but unhelpfully over the rear wall of the library. As the librar…

We are fleeing home, stuffed with lasagne and baked potatoes, carrying a bag of apples from their tree and copious thanks from both parents (we reset online banking for BOTH of them).

Or apples even. Weird autocorrect moment there!

Parent's tree is weighed down with delicious little soles. Yoinking a pile for ourselves.
View up into boughs of apple tree with little soles everywhere. A hand supporting 5 apples in the tip of a branch, with more in view behind

Back in again to ask how I was doing and if I'm tired (yes). And if she'd been good ('you've been in every 30 mins so far, so...')

If you know basic kabbalah it's actually not too hard to make a golem out of a labubu. Don't recommend it though. They have a pre-existing body-dharma. As soon as they wake they run straight for the sea. V hard to counter. Lost the first one. No idea what it's doing out there. Moved like lightning.

She's just been in to tell me I've been working for an hour, ask how well I'm doing (response: how long is a piece of string?), take a rice cake from the pack she gave me, complain about it ('yuck, yuck, yuck') and tell me she could hardly get out the chair and (again) she was up at Lidl at 7.30.

Mum's version of "leaving me in peace so I can begin indexing her 300 page book" involves her sitting in the room with me, tidying the room, asking me how work is, and trying to plug things into the computer I'm working on.

She surprised I'm not chatty.

Well, 12 hours sleep has helped a bit with the exhaustion.

I’ve not actively hated Rishi Sunak in a while, so the news he’s taken a job with Anthropic AI (aka the company I’m part of a mass lawsuit against for stealing our work to train their LLM) is actually kind of comforting.

One of our users went past as I was putting Halloween decorations in the window and I just waved with what was in my hand.

So yeah, I basically brandished a (plastic) chainsaw at them.

You can always rely on a librarian.

Between still fighting off a bug and working about 45 hours this week, my body is absolutely done with my nonsense.

When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child. But when I became grown, I put away childish things. Then when I became a bit more grown, I rebought those same childish things from a vintage reseller and kinda don’t know how to feel about it

I first misread the headline by dropping the last word, which changed it significantly. Then I reread it and viewed it as her having a large bill to pay off.

Both options amused me no end 😁

There is a small child being Constantly Instructed on this bus. On every possible element of life., from seasons, bus etiquette and even where to find a safe adult if she runs away from Mummy and Daddy. Apparently this last one happens a lot.

after careful study, I believe only people born between 1975 and 1995 should be allowed to use the internet

it's only racial profiling if it comes from the racial profiling region of france. otherwise it's sparkling reasonable suspicion.

McLaughlin: "Pritzker said there's racial profiling, which is absolutely false. Our officials use reasonable suspicion. That's protected under the US Constitution 4th Amendment."

"Salt eel" was a slang term among English sailors for a rope whip.

Samuel Pepys recorded thrashing his servant with one, writing, “With my salt eel went down in the parlor & there got my boy & did beat him till I was fain to take breath.”

Not cool, Sam. Not cool. 1/2

Meme. Photograph of marshmallow candy Peeps -- the yellow rabbit ones that are canonical Easter treats. You can see four of them clearly, in a row, and parts of other rows above and below them. These peeps are standing together as part of a broad swath of peeps. They are finding strength and resolve in the company of their peers. As we all do.

They have no mouths, but they each have three dots, representing two eyes and a nose. Probably. Or maybe not...perhaps we've been making assumptions about Peep biology that we should not. It might be that those dots represent three eyes. Or three noses.

It does appear, though, that they are staring very hard. Judgingly hard. They are considering the petty tyranny of Samuel Pepys and they do not like what they see. It is likely that they will get together in some sort of Caucus of the Peeps and kick him out, demanding that he begin to pronounce his name phonetically.

Meme text reads:
"It's time for kinder,
Gentler Pepys"

Trans rights are civil rights. If you aren't willing to die on the hill of trans rights, then you aren't willing to die on the hill of Black rights. Of Jewish rights. Of disabled rights. Of gay rights. Of anyone's rights. Human rights.
talleststone.bsky.social
I hate to say it but the majority of the country is not going to die on the hill of trans rights. We can’t protect ANY groups if we can’t win a national election, so purity tests only serve to make specific groups feel triumphant. That’s not “erasing” them; it’s long-horizon strategy.
