I'm not arguing that this PAC is irrelevant, or not worth scrutiny. It was simply out of the scope of this story.
Why we didn't mention Thrive by name - The story focuses on individual donors to each candidate in Mpls and what that tells us about the state of the race. We mention the money from PACs to provide context about the total amount of money in the race. The donations to Thrive didn't change that total.
We couldn't count those donations in the total because that would effectively be counting $105k in donations to All of Mpls twice.

As to why we mentioned We Love Minneapolis - although this group disbanded, it still raised considerable funds and the story looks at fundraising over the past year.
Thanks for the feedback. I'm happy to answer questions about our reporting decisions for this story.

We did pull data from all the PACs supporting candidates in this election, and that's reflected on the last chart in the story. Thrive PAC disclosed only donations from All of Minneapolis.

I strongly second this. Images like this steal part of your soul. Some of us have to watch horrific things because it's part of what we do as journalists. It's part of being honest and bearing witness, looking so others don't have to do the same. If it can be avoided, avoid it at all costs.
Folks, as someone who watched an enormous amount of graphic footage in my time as a journalist and developed PTSD because of it, please do not watch the Charlie Kirk footage.

Trust me. Once it's seared into your memory you cannot delete it.

You, a boring New Yorker: Having some sort of stupid Bluesky Discourse about the merits of New York vs. every single other city in America or some stupid shit.
Me, an enlightened Minnesotan: Having an Important Dialogue about the borders of Uptown and what that says about Twin Cities demographics.
Strib’s fun Uptown boundary project crunches 2,000 reader submissions and — as the definitive authority on this matter — I say they did well! You young people are getting a bit casual, but for once I’m counting on folks getting more conservative as they age! www.startribune.com/we-asked-whe...

We've solved it, and the argument shall never happen again, we declare.

This turned out so fun; come for the answer, stay for the pink and purple map at the end.
I'm super proud of our Uptown multiverse map. It may be the most stylish map the Strib has ever published. Prince would be proud!

Where is Uptown? Here's what you said.
Generational differences became clear as readers defined the Minneapolis neighborhood beyond just its geography.

It’s true! And it’ll be hard to limit myself to 50!
Big news at Belt! The 50 Maps family is growing. We just confirmed we'll be adding the Twin Cities to the lineup with Minneapolis-based cartographer named Jacob Steinberg. Hooray for Twin Cities in 50 Maps! 🗺️
My mom used to work there. They sell pipes, but not the fun kind
Not sure why it choked on that shape. It looks pretty contiguous to me. I didn't test it on such complex geometry as this. Love the joke, but we'll end up discarding submissions like this when it comes time to compile the results.

This is the only Uptown boundary I recognize.
It's the prince glyph overlaid on a city map using the strib's online mapping tool
There's a checkbox on the final submission page
Tepid take. More reason to boo you the next time I'm at the VFW. When's the next event?
Good question! We're not collecting any location info about submitters other than whether they live or have lived in Uptown, and what they put in their note. We're very interested to see how the boundaries differ between those who have called Uptown home, and those who haven't.
