first time I've done a "hello new followers" thing bc I've never had many followers on any platform, but I'm enjoying the high engagement culture of this website. seems that I've appeared on enough starter packs to gain a few followers, so: I'm john.

The Virginia Senate just told UVA it’s not getting state funding if it accepts the compact since UVA exists to serve Virginia, its residents, & their interests—not be a tool of the federal govt. No medieval filter here! A modern recreation of a Viking ruler for Denmark’s National Museum, based on the depiction of Cnut in the New Minster Liber Vitae and on clothes found at a grave in Mammen, Denmark. #medievalsky

"you're telling me this place is BEYOND the land of dog men?!"

very strange to think of telling somebody that their bits and bobs will someday end up in some distant land where they've been told monsters live

saw it last night too and what I most enjoyed about this film is that it's a very recognizable dystopia parallel to our current one. there are many possible near futures, and OBAA illuminates one of them.

So cool that whenever someone asks the president, “did you eat the Lindbergh baby” he’s like, “no but I’d be allowed to, I have the right to, I might do it later”

that's it, I'm definitely seeing it now

‘“For this movie to make any sense at all, one has to believe the United States, today, right now, is a fascist dictatorship,” wrote David Marcus at Fox News.’

Damn, this movie must make a lot of sense.

While Paul Thomas Anderson's film is being heralded as a masterpiece by many, some conservatives accuse it of potentially inspiring left-wing violence.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

I feel like this photo of masked, armed men pepper spraying a pastor protecting his community is going to be a defining picture of this moment in America for a long, long time.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.
