“…the Red Line from the University of Houston-Downtown to the Texas Medical Center is one of the most successful transit projects in the country.

Yet, Mayor John Whitmire has chosen to undermine this backbone of Houston’s transit system.”

www.houstonchronicle.com/opinion/edit...
Why is Mayor Whitmire breaking the one part of Metro that didn’t need fixing?
Without explanation or warning, Houston changed downtown and midtown traffic signals so that the Red Line light rail is often stuck at red lights.

I even try to close them. I restart the work computer once a week... and still it's at least 15-20 once I really get the browser up and worked.
And at home? multiple windows with many tabs. couldn't even guess.

Now we have the Trump Administration's "nice university ya' got there, shame if anything should happen to it" campaign centered around a mafia-style protection racket they call "The Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education." Did we help make it happen? 1/ www.nytimes.com/2025/10/02/o...

It’s a 1️⃣-2️⃣punch: The State of Texas, the Regents, & the President dissolve the Faculty Council. Then Trump offers a compact that will affect academic freedom, curriculum, student recruitment, research priorities, the future of academic programs. Once faculty had a voice in such decisions. No longer.

✴️For the first time since 1945, UT does not have a representative faculty council.

Our press release on the replacement of an elected Faculty Council with faculty advisory bodies composed entirely of appointees of President Davis.

Eight years ago, a gunman armed with more than 20 assault weapons and high-capacity magazines opened fire on a crowd at the Route 91 Harvest Festival. Sixty people were shot and killed, and more than 400 others were shot and wounded. It is the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.

Watching the lava fountains can be mesmerizing & beautiful or I start to fixate on how it matches the anger in my brain about our government. Molten rock shooting out of Earth.
A good stream to have on today as I think about the USGS & NPS staff across the country also.

Hurricane Humberto (2007) was the first tropical system I experienced (minorly) in Houston and then Imelda (2019) brought a tremendous amount of rain & disruption. I'm glad the "H" and potential "I" storms are not headed to Texas this season. Stay safe, East Coast.

A moment later the sun is just to the right of track alignment but the full disk is visible. 7:19am
Mostly a successful sunrise stalking. 🌅 feeling more peaceful.
Hope you have a good Wednesday!
Full circle of sun disk is above the horizon & clouds but now just to right off-center of tracks. Still a pretty sunrise.

Train passed. View of train’s end.
Now there are clouds low on the horizon so sun’s disk is partly hidden when the train shrinks in distance.
7:18 would be the magic moment.
Looking east toward sunrise along train tracks. The back end of train still visible The sun is above horizon and in-line with tracks but clouds clip our view of full sun disk. No a full circle.
