'With the Ucas application deadline around the corner on Wednesday 14 January, thousands more will be considering whether doing the same might be worth it for them, too.

More than 700,000 "commuter students" are at universities across the UK.' 1/2

Over a third of students choose not to live at university, latest figures suggest - but is it worth it?

One of my favourite YouTube clips. From 7 years ago! youtu.be/1OADXNGnJok?...

We were chatting about having to remember the change from 2025 to 2026 with my nephew. I automatically started to say ‘wait until you write your first cheque of the year’ and stopped myself short in horror. How long has it been since I wrote a cheque now?! And he wouldn’t even know what a cheque is!

I enjoy seeing old postcards of universities posted by @hbsj.bsky.social here on Bluesky. Here’s more on one of them.

Oh yes.

Found out today that a friend and mentor was killed in a car accident. I hadn’t met up with Harry since before Covid hit. I’d thought several times that I needed to arrange a catch up but didn’t get round to doing anything. Wish I had. I’ll miss our hot chocolate and cake chats. Rest in peace Harry!

Was thinking about it again just yesterday morning when I was emptying a plastic pouch of Daz’ new food topper. Been trying to see if it’s a type of plastic I can at least try to recycle. Not an easy task so far.

Sustainable dog food is an example I use when introducing my entrepreneurship module assessment task to come up with a business or social enterprise idea to reduce carbon emissions. Example was inspired by the Climate Hero carbon footprint calculator. carbon-calculator.climatehero.org

Yeah. Daz has had general anaesthetic twice and each time I was in bits with worry. Luckily we have an excellent vet that understands greyhounds. Still scares me.

That’s what we use too and for the same reason. Daz has pretty good teeth for his age. Some tartar but no dental work needed yet.

We get this from Daz every morning too. Chilli even looks like Daz!
This is Chilli. He can go from zero to sixty in a matter of seconds. Uses this extraordinary ability to say good morning very promptly. 14/10 (IG: chilli.thegreyhound)

A reminder for anyone new to Bluesky (or who just wants to follow more policy wonks here) that I've made a starter pack of all the think tanks I've spotted on the platform and the researchers working at them (if you're missing and want adding in let me know!) - go.bsky.app/Geu9Jd8

Was thinking about this again as I stood in wonder as two kites flew over my house dive bombing each other. Video after they separated.

Oh my goodness! Both are so true!! We’ve still got blood stains in our carpets after Daz happily zoomed around the house spurting blood from a bad pad cut that required stitching under general anaesthetic. But tweak a toe nail and we get screams of death!!

A crochet Daz the Greyhound arrived in the post today. Made by my amazing god daughter, Morwenna. madebymorwenna.sumupstore.com

My highly contingent and partial take on Gen AI in Higher Education is this: the biggest problem with Gen AI isn't brazen cheating or dishonesty. It's the normalisation of seemingly minor things being incorrect: call it a 'close enough' mentality.

Need to be men’s to fit. Plus the cheaper the better as you will go through them! Well worth the try.

The best advice I ever received was from an elderly man in Huddersfield where ice on pavements is a regular occurrence: wear socks over your shoes. It works so well.

Agree with every word.

Almost exactly a decade ago I was absentmindedly looking at hashtags on Twitter and saw #oregonstandoff. And so began my obsession with US politics.
And thus began our decade of white men openly, brazenly and vigorously doing crimes and getting away with it.

Bafflingly there are still people out there in the world who think being passionate about nature is “kind of weird”. or “a niche interest”. These people have it all wrong. Nature isn’t some quirky sideline to the main business. It IS the main business. Nature is us.

The Daily Mail doesn’t link to the report they say is calling for an end to exams. It isn’t something I recognise. Exams are seen globally as a contributor to awarding gaps - not just relating to ethnicity - but we haven’t called for an end of them. A mix of assessment is needed.

We’ve made it into the Daily Mail!
