“Well Harry,” said Hagrid, “a translation is a lot like a plane crash. The smartest people in the world can recover 100% of the pieces and tell you exactly what happened, but that bitch ain't flyin.”

"cheeseburgers cause heart attacks" is true. but the statement omits the several thousand steps you'd need to understand in order to address the problem in a person who won't stop ordering five guys.

A lot of people who are not scientists love to break out the word “polycrisis” but global warming is one of the most monocausal crisis ever: the vibrational modes of CO2 have an absorption peak around the same wavenumber the earth’s surface has a reflection peak at. We’ve known this for centuries!

Friends and comrades made a crowdfunding page for my family.

It’s really hard to post this. I know that there are a lot of other important issues asking for money but things have gotten to the point where we need to open ourselves up to your support.

Thank you for your consideration.

So a thing quietly happening in the background for awhile now is rich parents dosing their kids with growth hormone.

I think it's hilarious we're gonna have a generation of seven foot three ogres who claim a working class background and get mad when you ask how they paid for that trip to Europe.

Let's be clear a what's happening here: the "censorship" and "bias" narrative is being extended to Wikipedia bc the far right knows that getting bullshit into LLMs is how to shape reality as "answer engines" replace search engines.

Wikipedia is core to that fight so the grievance blitz is here.

With Ai the fascist unreality state can hallucinate false evidence of a crime you never committed.

OpenAI employees are very excited about how well their new AI tool can create fake videos of people doing crimes and have definitely thought through all the implications of this

for what it's worth, someone yelled at the BFI about this and they responded that "it was supplied by the licensor/owner of the film". AI still seems like a great bet, especially if the licensor couldn't come to an arrangement with palladini's estate. that wolf is so dumb tho...

I don't get why they'd even try to improve the poster. the palladini is such a gem

Here's a post I've wanted to write up for awhile, tracing the history of the idea of a "Doomsday Machine," from fact to fiction (or maybe it was always, to some degree, fiction): doomsdaymachines.net/p/inventing-...

why so looking back?

we're in our heads about the past — wondering about whizzing back into the kingdom of regrets, shattering the laws of thermodynamics in the process.

oh and — the thing that happened that you totally forgot about? don't worry about it. if it were important, you'd remember it.

right, but how big is that mountain? or the boulders in the foreground? is it 16km to the cliff face?
lazenby.bsky.social
what's the scale of the foreground and background? intuition doesn't feel very helpful in this landscape

I think that's right. It would explain why the term "thunderbolt," meaning the electrical arc, has the sound at the front and identifies the arrow ("bolt") as belonging to the thunder. The term preserves the backwards causality of older times.
lazenby.bsky.social
"Lightning" is a contraction of "the lightening". We are biased by understanding and see the detonation caused by the electrical arc as the primary phenomenon. In earlier times the sound was the primary phenomenon. Thunder lasts much longer and is far, far more audible than the arc is ever visible.
