Since we're all (re-)connecting, a bit of an introduction perhaps?

I practice political phenomenology, study the histories that tie into that field, and esp Merleau-Ponty. Here's abook based on my dissertation; I also transcribed and edited his radio interviews.

It's pretty wild to me that investigators have uncovered that anti-trans campaigns are largely funded by the fossil fuel industry, and that the presumed motivations are pretty directly to redirect the public conversation away from climate change... and that this isn't bigger news.

most of translation is just changing "-ed" to "-ing" and then changing "-ing" back to "-ed" as many times as it takes until it stops bothering you

I strongly urge everyone to not just read this warning from @marcwatkins.bsky.social, but heed it, and be vocal and forceful pushing back against using AI to grade student writing. This must be anathema if we're going to have a world where learning means something. substack.com/inbox/post/1...

"AI threatens multiple forms of failure: model collapse, ecological collapse, and cognitive collapse. The current approach to AI cannot sustain itself indefinitely. The question becomes not whether current AI slop economies will destroy themselves, but when."

Brillant. www.e-flux.com/architecture...
Intensification - Kate Crawford - Eating the Future: The Metabolic Logic of AI Slop
AI slop isn’t invested in the order of events or even looking like reality. The slop is not the territory: it just smothers it in synthetic goop. It’s flooding the zone with AI shit.

A thread worth reading in full
tedmccormick.bsky.social
A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

Make all universities public and fully funded.
lethejerome.bsky.social
Whatever AI this will be will STILL not understand the text it generates and will STILL make it up as we go along.

This is tech competing with universities, undermining our "product" by making it a product, stealing our research, and extracting it until there can be no new knowledge.

Energy requirements for AI mean that the only way for the bubble not to burst would require companies to multiply their carbon footprint to an unimaginable degree. Right now, while AI is barely functional and mostly a novelty for the lazy, it requires so much energy that data centers rival cities.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

will just repeat that if you straight up replaced the current Canada Council grants system with this it would fund about 1000 more artists per year for the same amount of money and immeasurably greater stability

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

3 Oct 2025 -- CBS, long known as the Tiffany Network for its new excellence, is bringing in anti-trans lesbian Bari Weiss as head. Weiss resigned from NYT, citing its “illiberal environment, to start the Free Press, which frequently features transphobic pieces. @rikiwilchins.bsky.social
Who is Bari Weiss, the right-wing anti-trans queer woman being given the keys to CBS News?
She’s about to control the editorial direction of the once-celebrated network's news.

Israel has just arrested Greta Thunberg and many others.

Statement from the Global Sumud Flotilla:

“People of conscience have been abducted. The flotilla broke no laws. What is illegal is Israel’s genocide, Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza, and Israel’s use of starvation as a weapon.”

Israel seems to be intercepting right now.

So being against racism and fascism and standing with one’s community for self-defense is now considered a crime? Shame on UNC.

This is Dwayne Dixon. I know Dwayne and the students testifying to how great of a professor he is in the comments on Instagram are as shocked as I am.

Israeli Defense Minister Katz: "Those who remain in Gaza City will be terrorists and terror supporters."

In other words, Israel declares its intention to exterminate everyone in Gaza City who could not move south.

That is what calling everyone 'terrorists and terror supporters' means.

I have a genuine legal question- do you think there is a colorable claim for an author to go after an individual who uses a LLM to make a piece of writing that was trained without their permission on their work? Clearly there is for the LLM but what about for the users?

This is quite a fall. Wow. Also reminds me I have a few of these to review - not to mention my own coming out in French next week!

Baldwin: A change, real change is brought about when the people make a change. The poet or the revolutionary can articulate the necessity, but until the people themselves apprehend it nothing can happen. When the people have taken the necessity, when the movement starts moving, then the world moves.
