"Fully Depreciated" is a tax and accounting term that indicates the asset is past its useful economic life, the sort of incredibly nerdy business reference that I would make but in this context its about a young woman, which prompts one to ask, well, how would her value be going down

This detail from the WSJ’s new Trump-Epstein reporting also seems pretty bad www.wsj.com/us-news/law/...
The Epstein estate also turned over another letter from the book that references Trump. It came from businessman and longtime Mar-a-Lago member Joel Pashcow, who made a crude joke about a woman that Trump and Epstein socialized with in the 1990s, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Pashcow letter included a photo of a posterboard-sized check for $22,500, which had been mocked up to appear that it was sent from Trump to Epstein. Beneath it, a handwritten caption said: “Jeffrey showing early talents with money + women sells ‘fully depreciated’ [redacted] to Donald Trump for $22,500.” The woman’s name is redacted in the image.

i firmly think that the reason a lot of this stuff doesn't really get covered is because it's a bummer to bring up at a dinner party, and dinner party conversations are how the actual policy is formed in DC

while 'young republicans are literal nazis' is well known to folks here, the extent of it is surprisingly not that commonly known even in media and analyst circles, let alone normal people.

A common talking point of libertarians is that regulations are unnecessary because the market will regulate itself. After all, they'll say, if a brand sells products contaminated with lead, consumers can just vote with their wallets and not buy that product.

Yeah. So about that...

i was surprised to learn that bc most protein powders are considered dietary supplements, they basically fall into a regulatory grey area

there's no federal limit on the amount of lead they can contain and neither manufacturers nor the FDA have to prove these products are safe before they're sold
Protein powders and shakes, like all dietary supplements, fall into something of a regulatory gray area.

There is no federal limit specifying the amount of lead allowed in protein powders. And while the FDA requires that manufacturers keep their products free of harmful contaminants, it largely leaves it up to companies to decide what counts as harmful and test their own products for compliance.

Before 1994, manufacturers had to prove herbal products were safe before selling them. That changed after Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act. The law sharply limited the FDA’s authority, leaving supplements far less regulated than drugs.

Today, supplements are “presumed safe unless found otherwise,” says Cohen at Harvard Medical School, and most products face scrutiny only after reaching the market—meaning unsafe or contaminated supplements can reach consumers before problems are caught.

there are a couple of ways to think about this, one is that no one should be running for their first senate race at this age, and the other is that if platner can’t beat her, he definitely can’t beat collins. i think he can. everybody needs to stop crying and start fighting.

it is genuinely good that ICE is regularly tear gassing Chicago-area PDs
lorennacleary.bsky.social
At 105th chaos erupted when ICE agents allegedly crashed into an SUV. A crowd formed and objects were thrown. Pepper balls were shot into the crowd. Police arrived to try to have dialogue with the crowd when witnesses stated they began throwing rocks at ICE. ICE then deployed tear gas.

i cannot imagine having a brain which makes you think this and not "it is regrettable that the Republican party could not maintain a cordon sanitaire"

everyone needs to internalize that this is just how all republicans are and when nancy pelosi said "the country needs a strong republican party" she meant that more people like this should be powerful. they are all like this! they all think just like this and like trump and they love it and it's fun

there are a lot of takes on the Aztec Empire, some of them intended to avoid ethnocentrism, which take the position that Mesoamericans like dying to atrocities, which makes one wonder why the people making those arguments believe the Spanish did anything wrong.
