If I have one tip for people coming to Scotland, it’s this - slow down. Take the back roads. Don’t rush from the airport or the ferry to get up north.

There’s so much to see on the way. Here’s Forres, Dundee, Fife, and Angus.
A row of colourful beach huts face the sea. Two women are walking past, on the stony path near the beach. In the background you can see the hills of the Black Isle. Dundee railway bridge is silhouetted in the rising sun. The sky glows orange and gold, reflected in the River Tay. A row of cottages in a fishing village in Fife in the glow of the setting sun. They have red roofs and whitewashed walls - some of them are in the typical red stone that’s commonly seen in this area. A small country road lined with autumnal trees and shrubs.

My heartfelt condolences. And thanks for sharing this beautiful and moving poem.

As someone who has always taken on the accent of the place where I live - this is incredibly unsurprising. I mean, it’s totally normal, no?

My husband sounds Franconian when chatting to friends here, Bayerisch when on the phone to his cousins, and used Hochdeutsch with colleagues.

Please name who did this. If it’s you, give yourself 10 cool points.
The Antifa logo but for AMPHIFA - Amphibians against fascism. The logo is green and black instead of red and black and there’s a cute green cartoon frog head on the black flag.

The most German Verein you ever did see.

I probably first came across it in something by ETA Hoffmann, who was from Königsberg and went to college there while Kant was teaching there. I just googled Kant and "frug" out of curiosity now, found it in his letters, and remembered that there's a Gesellschaft zur Stärkung der Verben: neutsch.org

The southern Germans take quite the liberties with the language!

I’ve never heard it here in Franken, or from my Niederbayerische mother-in-law.

Oh dear! They may regret not having googled the name before choosing it.

You have to scroll quite a way down before you find the actual reason that a lot of people are doing this - caregiving.

I’m going to guess that most of the people who do this would actually prefer 9-5 job, but few families can afford one person to be a stay-at-home or part-time parent

Interesting. Someone said that the reason some dialects are so different is that they didn’t come along with various Rechtschreibreforms or language shifts.

I’ve only used it when I collapsed in the middle of the night. Wouldn’t have even thought about using it any other way.

Apparently archaic, so you might get some weird looks!

The living room is still chaos, but the view from my bed is so much nicer than before. I now look out of the window rather than at the Ikea wardrobe.
A dimly-lit room with a chest of drawers beside a window. There is a lamp and plants on the chest of drawers.

The #Feyler #Lebkuchen Catalogue arrived today. And it made me very nostalgic.

Not only for #Franken where i grew up, but also for living in a country where small companies and family businesses can survive and make an effort to send you a catalogue each year, updated too

Nostalgia, a 🧵

And, when did you last ever order anything by sending a postcard and agreeing by a tick to pay later? (dw they have an online shop too)

I remember filling out other orders like this, posting them and waiting weeks for something to arrive - the bill, or the items against cash.

A different time

Just read the word ‘frugen’ - as past tense (plural) of the verb ‘fragen’. Never seen that before, and a quick google reveals that it’s old-fashioned or perhaps regional. Anyone know where it’s used?

Only realised recently that here in Franken, we say ‘frägt/frägst’ instead of ‘fragt/fragst’.

Haha. It’s me. Totally integrated, but I carry a tea bag in my handbag in case we go somewhere where they don’t have Proper Tea.

I think the book is out of print. I picked it up second hand a few years ago. Might still be available on ebay or second hand book shops.
