It’s crazy

Feels as though these questions require a real clear-eyed look at the relationship between Congress and the executive, and the implications of this moment for separation of powers

NGL I am not confident SCOTUS is up to the task

If the executive can unilaterally shift all functioning out of an congressionally established agency, then what is left of Congress’ lawmaking?

Why should Congress authorize executive agencies to do anything at all, ever?

Insightful piece by Larry Lessig on the need for more transparency in Harvard faculty members’ ties to Epstein

The 2020 Harvard Epstein report now looks like a big joke

The First Epstein Report Ignored Summers. Harvard Must Do Better. | Opinion | The Harvard Crimson
How could Harvard have allowed this production of Hamlet without the Prince? And will it now commit to a practice that will not protect the elite among us, while shaming those not quite elite enough?

lol too on the nose

Good point - it also creates hierarchies within the university that are bad

But there is every incentive to place people amendable to this business model in positions of leadership?

I was trying to figure out a way to put this in writing diplomatically and concluded that i could not

Thank you for doing it for me 😬

Ex) maybe now controversial to point out, but before she was fired by billionaires (Pritzker, ackman), Claudine Gay courted them hard

She even renamed Harvard’s graduate school after a billionaire. It’s her one signature accomplishment!

Hedge Fund CEO Ken Griffin ’89 Makes $300M Donation to FAS, Harvard to Rename GSAS in His Honor | News | The Harvard Crimson
Billionaire hedge fund CEO and Republican megadonor Kenneth C. Griffin ’89 donated $300 million to Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the University announced Tuesday morning. Harvard will rename...

This article only scratches the surface of a complex issue

If university’s accept billionaires’ money then of course billionaires will want a say in how universities are run

And cuts to federal funding will only exacerbate research universities’ reliance on billionaire philanthropy
A big trend in higher ed and I absolutely hate it
Handing the keys of governance to unqualified billionaires and allowing them to far exceed the proper role of the Executive Branch in dictating to other agencies (i.e. Musk/DOGE) or institutions of civil society (as with Rowan/ Compact) sure does not seem "populist."

This could get ugly!

Not crediting anyone - simply pointing out the politics

That said, a serious inquiry by Republicans on Harvard’s ties to Epstein will not meet with the kind of internal opposition that cuts to funding or cuts to student visas would

As I was saying…

Feeling vindicated in this take - Democrats should get Mamdani out on the cable news circuit! Stop ignoring him!
My hot take is that Mamdani is a very effective communicator and campaigner

And he’s funny too

Democrats should not just learn from him, but they should use him strategically - send him to Fox News etc, & let him make his policy pitches

No more of this weird “let’s ignore him” nonsense

Huh

“Had UChicago simply matched the market, its endowment would be $6.45 billion larger today—more than enough to repay its entire debt.”

Don’t understand why these people aren’t simply fired

Trump posts again about Democrats, saying their behavior is “punishable by DEATH!”
Trump posts again about Democrats, saying their behavior is “punishable by DEATH!”

Any young scholar Summers has mentored must now ask themselves: “What has he said about me? And to whom? What part of the student-professor zone of confidentiality did he violate? Will all of this come out?”

And I am sorry for that - I know he mentored a lot of people and violated a lot of trust

Seeing this take from people on the right, and it misunderstands the role of a professor in today’s academy - which is to do research AND to teach & mentor

Cannot be a successful faculty member without both

If you hold Claudine Gay to high standards on the 1st, you need to hold Summers on the 2nd
