Reintroduction of me:
- kind of a mess
- parent of middle grade kids (10&12yrs)
- have myalgic encephalomyelitis probably triggered by COVID before community spread was recognized, mostly housebound and only a few hours out of bed a day
- still a climate person in my heart but no energy to activism

My 2yo just informed me that her favorite food is gummy bears wrapped in salami. Then she held eye contact while wrapping a gummy bear in salami and eating it.

I think they might have aired together? Vague memories.

Ironically I stopped by my friend's apartment when they were airing and watched them before watching literally any of the other episodes.

Hope it goes as well as possible! 🤞

the number of times I've seen Canadians give land acknowledgements at tech conferences and then immediately launch into discussions about "Canadian digital sovereignty" that completely excludes any concept of Indigenous rights or even us as Peoples at all. It's absurd, I can't wrap my head around it

Just blocked an AI booster guy for asserting that "humans are bad at math" just like GenAI.

No! We literally invented it. Math is a human construct and a human discipline. We made math. We are math. Any machines we made to assist with math were designed and programmed by us.

Just saw someone sincerely say that "everyone uses AI" in research, and that is just not a true statement.
iansociologo.bsky.social
About 30% of researchers have used AI to write or edit their paper, and a majority who have done so did not disclose it.

My mother taught my 10yo to knit this summer and she has managed to knit a dishcloth and is starting on a scarf. (I taught her the purl stitch and how to cast on.) My 10yo has now taught my 13yo the knit stitch and he is practicing. Here's hoping I get two knitters knitting out of this.

Sad news about Diane Keaton. So many good movies. Personally, I will always be grateful for her role in The Family Stone, the only major film I've seen to show a flat mastectomy closure in a thoughtful and accurate way. It is a brief scene, but it matters.

Long Covid and IACC advocacy cannot be condoning a regime that’s undertaking this project. There is no version that ends well for us.

The promotion of pseudoscience about a supposed “cause” or “cure” of autism and the destruction of special education (and all of public education, really) are part of the same project. It is a fascist attempt to expel certain people from the body politic, based in eugenics.
sarapartridge.bsky.social
There are reports that the *entire* office of special education at the US Dept of Education has been cut. These hardworking folks ensure kids with disabilities get equal access to a quality education.

America’s children deserve better than this.

Thanks! That's worth knowing!

My phone is on its last legs (some apps refusing to work on it anymore).

I usually buy refurbished Android phones, but considering a refurbished iPhone this time. I am trying to deGoogle, but obviously apple isn't much better?

Is it better enough to deal with the inconvenience of switching?

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

Traveling halfway across the world & packing into a room for a conference panel on the theme of resisting eugenics.

But not wearing a respirator during a surge in the ongoing pandemic.

What a fun way to show how the research & scholars you’re there to ostensibly listen to mean jack shit to you.

“If we assume, conservatively, that it takes 12 to 15 years to develop acceptable therapeutics for Long COVID, and then another 18 years for them to reach clinical practice, people my age — and yours — will have passed before they get help. We need to accelerate this.”
thesicktimes.org
A group of 53 people with #LongCOVID joined a clinical trial for Vyvgart. For many of them, the treatment changed everything.

Then, without warning, Argenx canceled the trial.

Most of them have now relapsed.

They're calling on the NIH and HHS to study the drug: bit.ly/48l1Qp5
A photo Nicole Barrick, a woman in a pink KN95 mask, receives an infusion of Vyvgart. The text reads, "The Sick Times. Vyvgart brought us back to life, but the Long COVID trial was canceled. We are calling on the NIH and HHS to study the drug. By Clare Banaszewski, Nicole Barrick, Mike Bilik, Addie Davis, Mia Delli Gatti, Ellie Hayes, Roman White." "For those living with Long COVID, every ounce of hope is hard-won. This isn’t just about physical symptoms. It’s about the emotional toll of being given hope — and then having it taken away." - Vyvgart clinical trial participants

Authoritarianism is a high-control philosophy that requires absolute authority to determine social norms. If we can show up to serious moments in frog costumes, it's a blatant refusal to recognize that authority even in the face of weapons of war. Creative shit matters.

Do you all think it’s inhumane to leave people rotting in bed (literally, not metaphorically)? Im talking about people who cannot tolerate light and sound, and maybe even touch. People who can’t drink or chew on their own. For decades.

If so then you should look up Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.
