Like, aside from the obvious moral concerns, I’d argue that a man who really thought no one would find out or care about him having a Nazi tattoo on his goddamned tiddy isn’t smart enough to be a US senator. Maybe run for the PTA or something. IDK. But a peer of Elizabeth Warren you are NOT.

Meanwhile, maybe let’s have a think about all the people whose leadership potential has been overlooked or not supported, in order to make space for Mr. Day One Of Not Being A Nazi to launch his career. Maybe put some of that energy toward them.

People are bitching about “political purity tests” but look. If “I choose to wear a Nazi SS tattoo” is not disqualifying for public leadership then there is no bar at all. That attitude is just normalizing Nazism.

He is welcome to begin the real work of making amends. I hear he has announced he’s going to cover the tattoo. Great. Maybe that’s day one of recovering from being a Nazi. He can talk to us about stepping into leadership in another ten years after doing the work. Maybe.

You have to ask yourself what kind of social milieu he has been surrounding himself with, that this hasn’t been a problem for him before now. Why has no one brought this up before he as running for senate?

If he hasn’t purged the Nazis and edgelords from his circles, then he hasn’t started.

So he says he’s a communist now. That’s not enough.

Esp when at the same time he’s trying to claim he didn’t know what it meant. His other statements and Reddit history belie that. Lying about who you’ve been isn’t how recovery works.

It was HIS choice to launch a political career before doing any of the work to make amends or even stop actively carrying this symbol on his body.

He has to actually do the hard work to earn trust and prove he has transformed himself.

You can disavow youthful stupidity or ideologies you no longer believe in. Part of how you do that is to not keep wearing the literal insignia of the fucking SS.

Recovering from being a Nazi is a thing. We should welcome it; it has to start somewhere.

It is also clear from the comments and Reddit posts that he didn’t just naively get it as a cool skull not knowing what it meant. This man was posting racist stuff under a swastika profile pic. The tattoo exists in that context.

He wasn’t naive. He was an actual Nazi.

Having a tattoo isn’t just a statement about the moment you got it. It’s a choice you make every day to keep dedicating your one and only living body to portraying that message.

He has admitted to knowing for years what it meant. He chose not to cover or remove it. He chose.

As a tattoo artist I feel obliged to say, having a Nazi tattoo is disqualifying for any public service or leadership of any kind.

You can say “oh it’s 10+ years old, he didn’t know what it meant when he got it, etc.”

The work IS the joy for me. I don’t want to be able to snap my fingers and have a completed “product.” I want to be transformed by the process. I’m an author but I do this because I enjoy the rigor of being a writer.

It’s pretty gross how the author of this article concedes in his closing that he and his presumed reader plan to do fuck-all to change their behavior or use of these exploitation machines.
