Standing inside Poço Iniciàtico (Initiation Well) at Quinta da Regaleira was a surreal experience!

The Initiation Well at the Quinta da Regaleira was designed by Italian architect Luigi Manini, under the direction of the property owner António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro who wanted to build out the estate to reflect his interests and ideologies. The well has nine platforms, which are thought to represent the nine circles of Hell, the nine divisions of Purgatory, and the nine skies that make up Paradise in Dante Alighieri's epic theological poem, "Divine Comedy," written in the 14th century.

The full Dante quote I wanted to use, but ran out of characters:

Neither day nor night

Day’s end when the last light of the sun drapes the mountains in gold and rose

A range of rugged peaks stretches across the horizon, their slopes painted in warm tones that fade to deep forest green at the base. The lake below lies perfectly still, a flawless mirror that doubles the grandeur above — every ridge, every glowing summit reflected in calm, glasslike symmetry.

The sky carries the quiet drama of evening: soft amber and peach along the horizon, giving way to cool blue higher up, streaked with pale clouds catching the sun’s final touch. To the west, the light has begun to slide behind the ridges, setting the edges of the forest aglow, as though the trees themselves are holding the last embers of the day.

The atmosphere is one of calm transition — that delicate moment when warmth lingers on the mountains but cool air begins to rise from the water.

Lucky you for capturing a photo of it! One followed us along on a trail near Faraway Ranch when we visited Chiricahua in March. But I didn’t pull my camera out quick enough when I realized it was a Mexican Jay.
