Because the density of car infrastructure is too high!
Cartoon with 3 wide car lanes, a very narrow cycle path and a sidewalk that has been cordoned off due to damage. A cyclist and pedestrian argue over the use of the bicycle lane, while the driver in the adjacent lane thinks: "That space should belong to cars!".

What can I do to protect myself against respiratory diseases such as #influenza and #COVID19?
What can I do to protect myself?
Get vaccinated
Safe and effective vaccines are available to protect against seasonal influenza and COVID-19.

Use respiratory etiquette
Cough and sneeze into my arm/ elbow or into a tissue, NOT my hand.

Clean my hands regularly

Wear a mask
When in crowded, enclosed, or poorly ventilated areas if at risk for severe
COVID-19 or influenza

“The report makes two main practical demands to the football industry, beyond the obvious of reducing emissions, raising awareness and collecting more data: to ban polluting sponsors and to redesign the football calendar to make it more regional.”

This is a clever and attractive bike rack! 🚲

The math is the same in every city. Bikes and smart bike infrastructure SAVE a huge amount of space. And a huge amount of public money (infrastructure money, public health care money, & much more), a huge amount of ghg emissions, pollution and noise, & much more.

And then there’s what they GAIN us.
Bike parking rack in the shape of a vehicle, with a sign noting that every parking space for a vehicle represents parking for 10 bikes. Close-up of the sign showing that one car parking space equals the space for 10 parked bikes

“One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.”

“Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” #CityMakingMath

Copenhagen, the bicycle-friendliest place on the planet, publishes a biannual Bicycle Account, and buried in its pages is a rather astonishing fact.

“A 5-year study of 263K U.K. commuters, published in the British Medical Journal in 2017, found regular cycling cut the risk of death from any cause by 41%, and the incidence of cancer and heart disease by 45% and 46% respectively. Other large-scale studies have found similar.” Via @CarltonReid.com

Another reminder:

Respiratory infections spread mainly through the air. That’s why they affect the lungs.

Masks, worn correctly and consistently, reduce the spread of respiratory infections.

Respirators work better than masks.

Washing hands isn’t wrong, but it won’t stop airborne transmission.

Biking to work reduces the odds of dying from cancer by 51%! You’d think transit planners would find the hell out of bike lanes given how much money that saves to public and the government. Even “fiscal conservatives” can’t debunk the obvious societal good and savings from that.

Fund bike lanes!

“The long-term health benefits didn’t stop there: commuter cycling was also linked to a 24% reduced risk of cardiovascular hospitalizations, a 51% lower risk of dying from cancer, and improved mental health, as measured by fewer prescriptions for anxiety and depression.” Via @momentummag.bsky.social

What if we designed our cities, and the land-uses, densities & infrastructure that make them what they are, so that daily activity and exercise was just a normal, ordinary, almost “invisible” part of every day life?

It’s actually not that hard. We just have to change our priorities. #HealthyCities

The “E-Bike Effect:” Those who bought e-bikes increased their average daily bicycle use from 2.1km (1.3 miles) to 9.2km (5.7 miles), a 340% increase. The e-bike share of all their transportation increased dramatically too; from 17% to 49%.

E-bikes support fewer car trips.
