What do we know about the earliest history of cichlid fishes? Here’s an extended and updated English version of my article on the biogeography and early evolution of cichlids, which I originally published in German in 2020. 🐟 🧪 #cichlid #biogeography #paleontology

Biogeography, evolution, and ecology of the ancestral cichlids
This article examines the early evolution and biogeography of cichlids, discussing fossil evidence and the hypotheses regarding their origins. It reviews the debate between Gondwanan vicariance and ma...

The new European Butterfly Red List found that the biggest threats to butterflies continue to be habitat loss and degradation but climate warming is having a devastating effect on sp. in the far north and far south of Europe. 52% (34) of all Red List sp. are now threatened by climate warming.

We are also deeply saddened that the Madeiran Large White, Pieris wollastoni, is now officially extinct: it was last seen in 1986. The full report can be downloaded here www.bc-europe.eu/documents/68...

No better reason to join Bluesky then to say the first chapter of my PhD is out as a preprint! New surgeonfish phylogeny, ecomorphological relationships, evolutionary shape correlations-with NEW method to accurately account for phylogenetic covariation among shapes!

Phylogenetic relationships and the evolution of fin and body shape in the surgeonfishes
Patterns of evolutionary change in the fin and body shapes of fishes are strongly related to dietary ecology and locomotor mechanisms, and associations between shapes affects ecomorphological relation...

World octopus day, you say? Very well, then... here is an octopus (possibly a male argonaut). No clue what the jellyfish is. The jellyfish is swimming down to try and get away from the bright flashing lights.

A jellyfish, upside down because it's swimming downwards. On top of its bell is an octopus; it is translucent/white with some visible brown organs.

Fish suck... but species that feed on algae suck differently! 🐟 A new publication in Communications Biology by #UAFunMorph members Jana De Ridder, Peter Aerts, and Sam Van Wassenbergh, demonstrates how head motion patterns for generating suction are finetuned to the species' main diets.

I think we all know by now that deep sea fish hold the patent on weird. But for this #FishOfTheWeek let's talk about some deep sea fish that decided they needed weird eyes, of all things. The binocular fish is quite appropriately named

still amazing to me the number of movies, games, etc. which have Venus Flytrap-based creatures in some form compared to the actual native range of Venus Flytrap, which is like, the great untamed jungles of a few wet pine savannas in North Carolina

Paralabidochromis sauvagei from Lake Victoria. My fish are of the southern variety of this species, their ancestors originally come from Makobe Island. In the north of the lake, males are actually blue. 🐟 #fishkeeping #photography
A colorful cichlid in my aquarium. Plants are visible in the background. The fish is yellow with some reddish hues. It has a gray head and a black stripe running through its eye. Some faint lines are visible on its body.
