USA: 100,000 Floridians have died from COVID. It's time to show them respect.

"It's disrespectful that there's a conscious effort in Florida these days to do exactly what many fear most: to forget COVID ever happened here."

Source: archive.md/3naFT
A screenshot of a Sarasota Herald-Tribune opinion article titled “100,000 Floridians have died from COVID. It’s time to show them respect.” The subheading says it’s disrespectful that there’s a conscious effort in Florida to forget COVID ever happened. Below the headline, five people stand outdoors at dusk, holding posters with photos of COVID victims. Dozens of glowing candles are arranged on the grass in front of them, surrounding a small bouquet of flowers — a quiet memorial scene honoring lives lost to the pandemic.

There is no updated report for the week of October 13. The CDC has not updated in 2 weeks due to the shutdown, and Biobot skipped their update as well. Based on our forecast from October 6, 1 in 98 Americans (1.0%) are estimated actively infectious as of October 13, equivalent to 499,000 new daily infections, the first time dipping below an estimated half-million new daily infections since July 30th. Expect an update on October 20th. In the meantime, monitor state-level data where still available.

I’ve noticed that natural disasters are increasing in frequency but news coverage of them is becoming more and more sporadic.

Stuff I used to hear about in news outlets, even if it happened in a different continent, nowadays only shows up on social media unless it’s super local.

It also seems to be the case there’s some "unprecedented" incident every other month, if not several happening at once on different regions.

Like how parts of Alaska and Veracruz (Mexico) had catastrophic flash floods with less than a day of difference, but I only learned about Alaska from tiktok.

The Alliance Defending Freedom is a key force behind contemporary anti-trans & anti-abortion policy.

*HOW* are they speaking at a journalism conference?

This year's MediaFest - a conference for student journalists has a Faith breakout section that includes speakers from the Alliance Defending Freedom - a SPLC designated Hate Group (oddly CJR's article doesn't mention that).

I hope attendees and sponsors pull out.

But in recent weeks, MediaFest’s schedule has been amended to include people from other religious backgrounds. There will be more than twenty faith track speakers, on panels tackling such questions as “Can the Bible inform reporters on how to cover the news?” and discussing censorship on the basis of faith. “We even have a Muslim coming,” said Naomi Balk—who Thursday, October 16th

As culture shifts away from religion, reporters are caught in a paradox: non-religious reporters report on topics of faith, and reporters of faith report on non-religious topics.

I'm not arguing this is a vertical power dynamic, as if queer communities should favor us over other queer people instead, of course I don't think that. But ostracism is a real intra-community problem and it often begins with micro-aggression.

The fact that suspicion, disdain, or judgment about my sexuality from queer and trans people tends to have a different flavor and psychology behind it than when it comes from cishet transphobes doesn't take away from the impact. These aren't disconnected things, they occur in the same society.

Lots of us have great-grandparents names who were absolutely changed when they came here, and when people say otherwise, they're assuming your great-grandparents name was in the Roman alphabet.

Now, more than ever, it's important to understand why so many the myths we tell ourselves about immigration are actually very harmful.

First of all, your great-great-grandparents names *were not changed* at Ellis Island. No one there had the authority to do that.
