I haven't written this kind of personal essay in years, so it was interesting to revisit this one, originally published in 2018, that @noahmichelson.bsky.social asked me to update.

I've been wondering why Google Maps has gotten worse at its main job. I don't need a "guide" but when I want a map I do need a map.

Had this exact thought while driving straight into a Midwestern sunset the other day. Nature is the best artist, humans next, machines never.
Pope Leo XIV told students not to use artificial intelligence for homework, saying that AI ‘won’t stand in authentic wonder before the beauty of God’s creation.’

Shout out to anybody else who came home for the holiday just in time for a family member to get sick. With my dad at the same hospital where I was once a candy striper. His prognosis is good but at 88 even moderate pneumonia is scary.

Loved Julia M. Klein's review of THE AWARD, Daniel Pearl's new novel about the petty rivalries and infighting in literary Cambridge (MA). Not that I'd know anything about that! In this Sunday's print @bostonglobe.com www.bostonglobe.com/2025/11/24/a...
Literary Cambridge, behaving badly - The Boston Globe
Matthew Pearl’s cleverly plotted literary satire "The Award" begins with an intriguing author’s note: “Some of this happened.” We may never know just what.

Also in this Sunday's print edition of the @bostonglobe.com is @hamiltoncain.bsky.social's review of Sven Beckert's massive new book, CAPITALISM: A GLOBAL HISTORY. Really loved it when Hamilton emailed asking me to add an exclamation point after Karl Marx! www.bostonglobe.com/2025/11/24/a...
Is everything you ever learned about capitalism wrong? - The Boston Globe
While scholars have illuminated bits and pieces of this immense narrative, Beckert’s massive volume brings it together with impeccable authority and perspicacity.

I loved talking with Carla Kaplan about her new book, TROUBLEMAKER: THE FIERCE, UNRULY LIFE OF JESSICA MITFORD. Thankful there is now a wonderful biography of the best Mitford sister. In print this Sunday in the @bostonglobe.com but here now www.bostonglobe.com/2025/11/26/a...
Crossing borders and making (good) trouble, Jessica Mitford was a model for our times - The Boston Globe
One of the first things that struck Carla Kaplan about Jessica Mitford was her voice — not in speaking but on the page.

oh this is absolutely what i think. i think they feed him fake polls and outright AI slop
At this point, I wonder if he isn't lying when he says he has "my highest Poll Numbers, ever" since it's entirely possible that's what his aides are telling him. It's quite likely that there's an entire Potemkin village built around Trump right now.

Barred from Gaza for 2 years, international journalists are still fighting for access

The CDC has turned off its vaccine search tool.

The vaccines.gov site now gives an error when you enter a valid zip code.

They also removed text saying “Vaccines can help you stay healthy” and added a banner saying the site is being updated.

I’ve been off social media for the past few days on a Midwestern Eat, Pray, Love tour — ie, driving to my folks’ house in Kansas for Thanksgiving, stopping to visit old friends along the way. Highly, HIGHLY recommend.

I think the House does not have the capacity to do all the investigations that will be needed.

We need more; we need to think bigger. We need a Truth and Reconciliation commission, and we need serious punishments. We could also use the Hague for some of the criminals.
this is one of the dozens of congressional investigations dems should undertake if they regain the house. other: trump sons, donors to the epstein ball room, pardons sold, bribes paid in crypto just to start, $10million from egyptians.

In my epistolary relationship with an old friend, I just learned for the fist time about the Johari Window. So wild. I've done a similar thing via HR at one of my many workplaces, but to do it asking friends and associates to provide feedback is fascinating.

This racist monster isn't even pretending to talk about citizenship here any longer - he's celebrating foreign-born people losing work REGARDLESS of citizenship.

The Republican Party under Trump is a blatantly white supremacist institution and no Republican deserves your vote.
Wow. Stephen Miller and the White House political operation are now openly, explicitly celebrating the fact that *legally* present immigrants have lost their jobs:
