For those who don’t know how to do Alt-text on pics, memes, screenshots, etc., a small thread:
omegamom.bsky.social
For everyone who thinks Alt-text is text in your *post* that describes your photo: No! It is *attached* to the photo! You can still do a silly post about your pic *and* do alt-text! Example:
This is the top of my test post in the Bluesky app at the end of the Alt-text process—the whole thing wouldn’t fit in one screen. The photo is of a Greek town filled with whitewashed buildings, some of which have vivid aqua/turquoise painted roofs, against an ultramarine sea. This is the bottom half of the same post. When you click on the photo, you get the description. NOTE: You can type in UP TO —> 2,000 <— characters to describe it! (You don’t need that many. Really. Trust me.)

Really good thread on the apparel industry, and why “buying American” doesn’t necessarily mean “buying ethically or cheaply”.

This two-parter below is exactly why it's hard to make clothes in the United States.

Let's look at how much it costs to produce a button-up shirt in the US. 🧵
Someone on Twitter replies to me: "meh. buy american or stfu."

Two hours later, in a separate thread, the write: "$30 for a single button-up is ridiculous unless it is decent quality silk."

I really wouldn’t be shining lasers at helicopters if I were you. It’s illegal and could cause an aircraft to crash - and that could kill a LOT of people, in the air and on the ground.

And the ICE goons appear to be *salivating* at the chance to claim people that they arrest were doing this:

my father (a retired white engineer who has been in oklahoma for 40 years) is my weathervane for what normal people who just watch the news periodically think, and he was like “so, they want to call the guard out on a bunch of kids wearing frog suits? is that true?”, the admin is losing the PR war

A bad shot of me and Cassie. For some reason, OmegaDad takes photos of me from far (ish) away.
An older lady (me) stands in a graveled driveway in front of yucca and juniper, with a darling dawg seated at her feet looking at you. (Cassie wanted to go to Dad, who is taking the photo. I am restraining her on the leash.)

“I … met with the governor, met with the mayor, met with the chief of police, and the superintendent of the highway patrol. They’re all lying, and disingenuous, and dishonest people,” Noem said, because they wouldn’t back up her baseless claims that the streets were overrun with terrorists.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is convinced, against all evidence, that Portland is a war zone.

So my buddy Carlota, who is taking over Dogskull Patch, has a group of feral cats to deal. She’s been trapping and neutering as possible, but one sweetheart named Big Daddy showed up on the porch limping. Some asshole shot him. She’s raising money for his amputation and care. gofund.me/3b6cf293e

I finally got a subscription for @trueref.bsky.social and dudes...The volume and range of quality pose photos you can download for a shockingly low price is incredible. A treasure trove of everything you could need. As a broke artist, this is a worthy investment and a generous resource to support.

GOOD NEWS! Researchers have developed a cancer vaccine that has shown STUNNING results, PREVENTING up to 88% of MULTIPLE aggressive cancers by harnessing dual-pathway nanoparticles that train the immune system to recognize and destroy tumor cells. In some cases, it COMPLETELY prevented metastasis.

thiel, man, what the fuck are you talking about

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.
