I think about this a lot. 99% of people walking in the Twin Cities at any given time are walking their dogs or walking to their car.

Having lived through 25 years of Minneapolis arguments over transit, cats, and bikes, I have to say as (now) a visitor that as imperfect as the solutions have been, there are a lot of ways to get around this city now. BUT, and this is a big one…

I really feel that Trader Joe's is one of the few places that correctly sizes their parking lots, and it's just a shock to most people that it isn't 4x oversized
brooklynspoke.bsky.social
One of these days we'll do an episode on why the parking lots at Trader Joe's are small. tl;dr: the stores themselves are small compared to other grocery stores which helps them find locations where they don't have to supply massive amounts of parking as mandated by local parking requirements.

seems like a non-insignificant percentage of rage against the machine's fanbase are young republican men driving SUVs bopping their head to anti-oil, pro-immigrant songs thinking the lyrics are about how they wish their suburban parents would get off their back
Tom Morello tweets: "Fascinating that all those “don’t tread on me” posers and their AR-15’s are nowhere to be seen and government tyranny is instead being opposed by a guy in an inflatable frog suit."

Someone named Manny replies: "@grok
why do some people say Tom Morello and band mates are RAGE FOR THE MACHINE and not against ?"

"Depends on who you ask" framing is one of the most grating tics in modern political journalism. Objective reality exists and your job is to describe it.

A classic case of irresponsible both-sidesism from the NYT. The story is that Trump and MAGA propagandists are lying about Portland to incite a conflict, not that there are different views of the matter.

We're apparently a communist hellscape, and we don't want the whole US to look that way, I assume. Nevermind we're at the top of basically ever quality of life metric for the states....

Could literally probably house an additional 50,000 people in the corridor without barely breaking a sweat if you actually threw up more dense housing.

So much fun riding around St Paul tonight, dumb dangerous concrete bollards back blocking the Shepard bike path not withstanding.

Thanks to @joyfulridersclub.bsky.social for bringing the party!

Having Republicans be so openly pro-fascist (because that’s the opposite of anti-fascist) is WILD

The campaign against “antifa” is about establishing a beachhead for further attacks on speech and assembly rights. We see that today in the effort to preemptively label No Kings protesters as “terrorists.”

Health insurance shouldn't exist, and healthcare is what you provide to anyone needing healthcare... WTF is hard about any of this 🤷‍♂️

We moved here 7 weeks ago, and our 9year old refuses to take a car anywhere. Fully converted by week 2 to going everywhere by bike. We love this city.

If you are in the metro this Sunday, please join us for a roll down Summit Ave.

The adopted Regional Trail Plan is at risk because of the small wealthy group of homeowners who oppose this being a safer corridor.

Meet at 1pm at the WWI Memorial.

Watching antisocial driver behavior in the school drop-off line makes it really clear that the pandemic destroyed whatever few shreds remained of the social compact, just pathological selfishness on display every day

There's been a person in a Jeep parked idling in front of my house since I got home 30 minutes ago, despite the current weather being literally basically perfect outside (68 °F).

I will still never believe people who claim gas is too expensive while people regularly do this.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

There's one that MnDOT put up a block from my work - drivers have no idea how to use it and I don't blame them, it's an over-engineered mess that's terrible at what it's supposed to do.

My best tip in life is if you can, move as close as possible to a grocery store you like that you can then walk to. Makes so many other aspects better too!

Walkable cities are perfect for busy people/families.

I had a 45 min break between work calls & wanted to fit in a quick walk.

My wife pointed out we still needed a grocery item for dinner.

I walked 10 mins to the co op and took the long way home.

And I got to pet a cute dog on the walk home!

Occasionally I get asked to be on some sort of work-life balance panel which I hate but will reluctantly drag myself to just so I can say my one and only tip: Live somewhere where you have a short, non-car commute to work. You’re welcome.

Another example of the real problem being that people like Cruz live in an alternate reality bubble. Pretty much anyone accusing orgs like Wikipedia, NPR, or PBS of liberal bias is really just showing they don't live in the objective reality.
