Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century “woke” ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison.

Below, are the accounts of Bartlomé de las Casas.
But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had in-vested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death.
The Indians had been given an impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. So they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed. After each six or eight months' work in the mines, which was the time required of each crew to dig enough gold for melting, up to a third of the men died.
While the men were sent many miles away to the mines, the wives remained to work the soil, forced into the excruciating job of digging and making thousands of hills for cassava plants.
Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides... they ceased to pro-create. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and fam-ished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desper-ation.... In this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk ... and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fer-tile... was depopulated... My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature, and now I tremble as I write....

You don't have to judge Columbus by the standards of today. His tenure as governor of Hispaniola was so horrific that he was dragged back to Spain in chains to answer for his many crimes.

Plus he never set foot on any land that would ever be a part of the United States of America.

I know there's a lot to keep up with but someone has ALREADY been killed by ICE in Chicago, its not a theoretical question, and folks are dying in ICE detention and being disappeared constantly, when you say "someone's gonna get killed" youre actually washing the blood from their hands 😘✌️

When the Orwellian named Dept of Homeland Security was created … MANY of us predicted that it would eventually be doing all the things that it is doing right now

Pinning it uniquely on Trump really misses the point in a bunch of ways

Broadview Police Chief Thomas Mills said ICE agents are draining the resources of his department and the community by making false 911 calls. He has demanded ICE turn over the names of all federal officers involved in each incident, and said he is ready to take ICE to court.

Perhaps most importantly, the Trump plan does nothing to advance Palestinian self-determination, which as @danaelkurd.bsky.social highlighted is strikingly absent from efforts to stop the war.

To the contrary, Trump's plan further institutionalizes the obstacles to self-determination.

Yes. And, yet, this arrived in my mailbox yesterday. I am begging people not to sanewash this man. Is he "winning", Chronicle of Higher Education? What does that mean? Driving other schools into the ground?

As the current admin works to write its own ahistorical definitions of “antisemitism” and “extremism,” it strikes me that they’re really trying to prematurely rewrite the histories that will be one day told about them

In the spirit of 'yes, and': something needing to be distinguished from constructively shaming illiberal public figures is the (arguable) necessity of not shaming fellow citizens who might be persuaded via dialogue to think/act/vote less illiberally. Still seems an essential tactical practice.

Saying again that the failure to address the William F. Buckley-fication of the GOP in my lifetime and the glossing over of how he gave a civil veneer to extremism while pushing its core ideas to "polite" folks is how we get to people criticizing others for frankly describing Kirk's agenda today.
audrelawdamercy.bsky.social
"On the last episode of his show before he was killed," Kirk told "his audience, falsely, that “one in 22 Black men will be a murderer in their lifetime” and that “by age of 23, half of all Black males have been arrested and not enough of them have been arrested.”

I’m getting news alerts like this, when the media should instead be asking “can the right manage its own reactive violence?”
petenewlove.bsky.social
Exactly this. Expressing sympathy for or even solidarity with the oppressors lets the victims of the oppressors know exactly where you stand

When intelligent public thinkers, such as Ezra Klein, valorize “Kirk as an example of, “practicing politics in exactly the right way,” . . .we are reminded that the blind spot many white liberals have when it comes to overlooking racism can never be overstated.”
