I’m Ryan, an earth science educator & curriculum developer at two colleges in Central California. I’ve had a hand in some cool virtual field experience innovations, but lately I’m the “Volcano Tissue Box Guy”. I’m pinning my Etsy store link here for when I release batches.

Me, a white guy standing on Johnston Ridge in front of Mount Saint Helens on a partly cloudy day. The mountain is visible with lots of green growth on the landslide zone in the mid ground. I’m leaning on a stone wall with my butt holding a black tissue box cover holder that also looks like Mount Saint Helens. Screenshot of science Fridays website that hosts my virtual field trip to columns of the Giants and Central California. It says science Friday in the top left-hand corner underneath which is a picture of the tallest pile at the columns of the Giants full of brown and black, the salt boulders with a few pine trees in the distance There is a hexagon with a light bulb as a page brake with a title underneath that says embark on a 360° geologic expedition.

Hops season is at peak in Grandview WA. These trucks are delivering the hop vines to a picking machine where they will be hung upside down to strip the cones from the vines then separated & cleaned before drying the hops with hot air and cooled for local breweries. #WeFeedYou

This is another reason why Newsom will never get my vote for president. He only operates on self interest, not moral or just interests.

First big snow of the season for the Sierra thanks to a big cold upper low moving down the coast from Pac NW then across CA in days ahead. Widespread 1-2+ feet expected per NWS.
Sierra snowfall forecast shows a max of 3 feet with many of the resorts picking up a solid pasting.

Looking West through Minas Passage, Nova Scotia

Partridge Island to the left, Cape Sharp to the right: the curve of Cape Split in the distant left

Highest tide range in the world. More water goes through Minas Passage twice a day than all the world’s rivers carry to the sea daily

It’s #earthscienceweek so I thought I’d go into a bit more detail on how educators can use to our Quick Quake tool to demonstrate how @earthquakes.au seismologists quickly calculate the location and magnitude of an earthquake. It works on macOS machines with Apple Silicon too.

Conditions were too good tonight, with clear skies and a late moonrise, to not chase the Milky Way. It was definitiely worth the trip. Pigeon Point Light Station State Historic Park, 10/11/2025. (Tech notes: Nikon D850, 22mm, f3.2, iso 800, single 20 sec exposure)

Models are trending up 📈 for #snow in the #Sierra and #Tahoe from Monday-Wednesday. This morning’s data has 15-20” of snow at @cssl.bsky.social near Donner Summit. Some of this will melt initially due to warm ground temps, but this would be a memorable October snow. #CAwx

There have been quite a few big earthquakes lately. Are they related? Are we having more big earthquakes than usual? Here’s a quick video addressing some of those questions.

Here is a closer look at the record low #Arctic sea ice around Svalbard currently. This coincides with the record warmth as well (check out my earlier post). Earlier last week temperatures in parts of Svalbard were more similar to July than October.

The specifics of the RIFs I’ve seen in group chats have been staggering. Bracing & reminding myself these are specifically intended to cause fear & distress.

Please share URLs for any good trackers you seen as they emerge. (I want more than OMB’s version) fedscoop.com/trump-federa...
Table of how many federal employees have been laid off in the latest RIF (Reduction in Force). This is from an OMB legal filing from Oct 10. For each agency, it lists number of fired employees, RIF notice date, and whether the administrations has recalled any of those employees to do work. Total headcount is 4,100 across 8 agencies. Treasury (1446) and HHS (1200) are the most affected. EPA (30) had the fewest layoffs this time.

This makes me so sad! My favorite media interviews were with Science in Action - somehow the conversation just flowed, and I got unexpected compliments from distant friends and colleagues who happened to tune in. The world needs more in-depth, accessible coverage of science, not less.

Science in Action on the BBC World Service celebrated its 50th birthday in 2014, but sadly won't be around to celebrate its 61st next month.
