Friday Flower 007: Petunia 💮✨

Petunias carry the active transposon dTph1, which powers mutant screens and paints stripey patterns as it jumps.

Their five petals are fused, with diverse color designs tracing the corolla’s fusion seam.

Picture how big the Hoover Dam is. An absolute unit. The Hoover Dam has a power capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW).

The solar farm that the Admin just cancelled could have produces 6.2 GW of power. That's more than 3 Hoover Dams.

SCOOP: The Bureau of Land Management says the largest solar project in Nevada — the Esmeralda 7 mega-farm — has been canceled

The news was quietly dropped via a sudden website update with no public word from any of the companies involved or a statement from the agency

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…
Trays of 100s of drying ears of corn, all labelled with colored tape. Closeup of several drying ears of corn, many with fluorescent (glowing) green kernels; a few kernels have sectors (patches) of purple (anthocyanin) pigment. Tape labels indicate the parents of the kernels on each ear.

Many sea stars begin life as young fairy-like creature (called a brachiolaria) that float through the open ocean. Eventually, a small star forms within them (here in yellow). The fairy-like brachiolaria sinks under the star’s weight, and the star pops out!

I keep going back and looking at this picture. It seems, no matter what topic I'm working with, I really like bright, saturated colors.

A month of cycling some client algae in my DIY turbidostat toward oceanic salinity. Got it to a bit over 30g/L NaCl or the waters just off the shoreline at a beach. Now to make backups and prepare for the next push to 40g/L. Yay, adaptive evolution!
