The alarming aspect of this deliberate "anti-woke" algorithmic biasing of LLMs from an educational perspective is our institutions all bought in to an imaginary of innovation, then got locked in to enterprise contracts, and now the models are being recoded so they undermine educational values
marcusluther.bsky.social
Genuine question: for those enthusiastically pushing AI tools into every part of our education system—what checks/guardrails are there around algorithmic biases like this?

The administration “is currently pressuring OpenAI and other AI companies to make their models more conservative-friendly.”

Higher Ed in 2025 is opening your mailbox to see that your institution has sent you:

1. A Center for Teaching and Learning call to integrate AI into your classroom; and

2. An Office of Academic Integrity email encouraging you to crack down on students who use AI to cheat.

Recently I was clearly someone’s killjoy, and the emotional force of the attack/defense (whichever it is) was so intense, I felt as if hit by a truck. All because I said if X violates laws, then better avoid X in research.

Seems common sense 🤷🏻‍♀️

Anyhoo, welcome to today's Dave Deep Thoughts, BlueSky post edition. Heh.

PS; generative AI is *not* a disability tool and it's garbage. Don't bother trying to say it is. I'm not buying and won't ever.

At the same time I know there's some folks that see my creativity and ways to be creative as some sort of proof I'm "not really that disabled". They seem to expect me to just sit and be miserable. That utilizing technology for my creativity isn't the same as, say, using a wheelchair.

This all got me thinking about how the intersection of disability and creativity is fucking wierd and frustrating at times. My need to create finds a way, thanks in part to technology, but mostly because of stubbornness. I *have* to create. It's just a part of my I can't prevent even if I tried.

This isn't a "why can't we all get along" kumbaya moment. Its a moment to understand all the ways in which the people who created OpenAI, Anthropic etc claiming that their machine god will bring utopia, are the actual "existential risks" to humanity.

Raising billions of dollars to "save humanity."

The MMR vaccine is one of the most stunningly effective medical therapeutics in existence. It’s also safer than most of your everyday activities. This is simply an attempt to stop people from vaccinating.

A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

This will ruin countless lives and the only correction will be a statement advising against using the COPILOT() function in a list of use cases that incrementally grows to include everything that people use spreadsheets for, one disaster at a time.
Tweet by Zack Korman @ZackKorman: "Copilot in Excel is a global financial crisis waiting to happen."

followed by a screenshot of Microsoft Excel with the numbers 1, 2, and 3, followed by a cell where the expression '=COPILOT("sum the numbers above")' has been evaluated as 15.

Listen. ONE of the reasons I rock with Dolly (Capricorn Gang) is because she’s always proven to me that integrity may cause you pain, but it will never be the reason you suffer. Which is not to say that suffering won’t come, but it’ll never be because you abandoned yourself. That’ll keep you going.
