Here's an example of the pencil in use, from someone who did a full restoration. You could use it to make tables or boxes very precisely.

a piece of paper in an old typewriter, with an attached pencil flipped down so that its point touches the paper on the roller. a box has been neatly drawn around a couple lines of text with this pencil attachment.

it's dope as hell that the world builds 100 million cars per year and all that plastic, metal, glass and rubber eventually ends up like this

"We spoke with Bray's neighbors, and while none had cows, one did in fact have a half gallon of milk that had gone off, although it was only a week beyond its expiration date. Bray's cat had no comment on their relationship. The Times has discovered that Bray plans to fly to Europe."

"Turning Point USA included Bray on a list of professors who they claim had made a pact with the Devil himself by the crossroads at midnight, which has given him the the ability to fly, to spoil his neighbors' milk in the cow, and to speak with his animal familiar. Bray denies these allegations."

"Mark Bray was teaching courses on the early modern witch craze. Turning Point USA accused him of being a witch, which he denies."

you'd think a prominent news outlet like the New York Times might mention that "antifa" isn't an actual organization in a long story about antifa, but nope!

and the subhead helps props up a false claim this professor was up to something seedy as something up for debate
NYT headline: "Rutgers Expert on Antifa Tries to Flee to Spain After Death Threats"

subheadline: "Mark Bray was teaching courses on antifascism. Turning Point USA accused him of belonging to antifa, which he denies. His flight to Spain was canceled abruptly on Wednesday night."

So, this week has been hard. Very hard. On Monday we found out that my kind, gentle, perfect little man Fergus had diffuse, fast-moving cancer throughout his body. So we had to make the awful decision to say goodbye to him yesterday.

I'm so sorry, but also so glad that you were able to say goodbye at home. When my wonderful Knute had to go, our vet made a house call, and it made all the difference.

#MSH45 | Richard Lasher
You've been at a job long enough to know a decent colleague to chat with.

The more you get to know them, the more they share. What's fact or fiction? You don't know, but you listen.

Then there's one story that's so over the top—a bona fide lie. But then, a photo appears.
A red Ford Pinto hatchback angles across a narrow gravel forest service road, a blue enduro motorcycle on a rear hitch carrier. Tall firs frame the view. Beyond them, a towering ash cloud from a pyroclastic density flow billows skyward. Photo by Richard Kent Lasher, May 18, 1980.

Compared to Dylan and Springsteen, country-music legend Johnny Cash can seem deeply uncool. It took time for me to appreciate his profound, plainspoken strength, writes Jon Fasman.

the Colossus of Chodes

i'd assumed "Colossus" was just a reference to the ancient wonder but it can never be that normal w/ Elon www.wsj.com/tech/elon-mu...
"Musk decided to name the data center Colossus—a reference to a popular trilogy of sci-fi novels from the 1960s by D.F. Jones, in which scientists built a supercomputer named Colossus that gained autonomy and plunged the world into war and chaos."
