I hope to return to the substance of this article later, but the framing in the opening paragraphs of this article is rough...
robwisc.bsky.social
2. "Great Awokening" – Adopting rightwing talking points neither accurately describes our world nor does it help make common cause with the left. The article presents itself as even handed, but blames the "woke" for giving conservatives PTSD.
robwisc.bsky.social
1. Polarization – Rightwing quotes in this piece show that many conservatives are not engaging with policy critiques in good faith. People are not polarized simply because of differing opinions about the same facts; rightwing activists and editorial boards are trying to manufacture backlash.
robwisc.bsky.social
Minor framing quibbles:

Petrilli bemoan's the "polarization" of gifted programs. One paragraph earlier, he says that conservatives were triggered by headlines about Mamdani's critique of NYC's gifted programs because the discourse "harkens back to the Great Awokening."

Wtf?
Screenshot of two paragraphs from article linked in quoted skeet that read:

Still, I suspect that most of the folks on the right and center who responded angrily to Mandani’s proposal didn’t get past the headlines. “Socialist wants to kill gifted education” surely triggered some PTSD among these folks, as it harkens back to the darkest days of the Great Awokening when any effort to promote “merit” or “excellence” was branded as racist. As AEI’s James Pethokoukis put it, “true equality shouldn’t mean slowing the swift. How is this not obvious?” Or cue the Wall Street Journal editorial page: “Socialism in a nutshell: A persistent fear that somebody, somewhere, might be getting ahead and ought to be yanked back.”

As a booster of advanced education, though, it bothers me that this issue is so polarized. A recurring theme of my writing—and this newsletter—is that reform advocates should always want our preferred policies to gain bipartisan support. That’s not always possible (see: private school choice) but when it is, it makes for a stronger and more durable coalition.

The "wrote the other day" link in your second paragraph goes to a download on Chester Finn's C Drive rather than Greenman's Substack post.

Fam, stop accepting their framing. Regardless of what this child did, 13-year-olds Brown kids are not hardened criminals. Youth are impulsive & their brains are not fully developed. Punishing them like adults does not decrease crime-Black & Brown youth deserve to be treated like kids, not adultified

I posted about this on X, and Tricia McLaughlin, the DHS spokesperson, QTed me to say the kid was actually a hardened criminal arrested with a knife and a gun.

So far she has provided no evidence of this. I share this to give DHS's response, and for the possibility she is telling the truth.
My original post on X: "This makes NO SENSE. A 13-year-old was arrested by local police for unknown reasons, and then turned over to ICE, which is detaining him far away from his mother — who is going through immigration court, has an asylum application on file, and is legally authorized to work." Underneath that I posted a link to the opening paragraphs of the article and the headline.

In response, DHS Spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin, @TriciaOhio, wrote: "Here are the facts: he posed a public safety threat with an extensive rap sheet including violent assault with a dangerous weapon, battery, breaking and entering, destruction of property. He was in possession of a firearm and 5-7 inch knife when arrested."

This work is really important. I see the language in the 2nd ad all the time — “you’re not alone.”

But the subtext is: “You’re absolutely alone."

Whatever this “Crimson” organization is offering, it DEPENDS on you feeling alone.

That’s what makes it predatory.

Just a reminder that Wikipedia is the only remaining reliable source of information that right wing billionaires can't control. (Although they'll never stop trying.)

My best organizing tip for academic workers (& all workers, but academics esp. can struggle to internalize this IME) is to go to campus workers with less power than you as the *first* step of any campaign. Going to deans etc w/ more power cedes your own power to the boss & shrinks your coalition.

We actually know a lot about what happens when conservatives embargo ideas at public universities.

In the 1920s, they called it "evolution," but conservatives really targeted a broad range of ideas, including modern science but also ideas about racial equality.

What happened back then? A 🧵
The Conservative War on Education That Failed
A full century ago, the most effective school-ban campaign in American history set the pattern: noise, fury, rancor, and fear, but not much change in what schools actually teach.
