Fam, stop accepting their framing. Regardless of what this child did, 13-year-olds Brown kids are not hardened criminals. Youth are impulsive & their brains are not fully developed. Punishing them like adults does not decrease crime-Black & Brown youth deserve to be treated like kids, not adultified

I posted about this on X, and Tricia McLaughlin, the DHS spokesperson, QTed me to say the kid was actually a hardened criminal arrested with a knife and a gun.

So far she has provided no evidence of this. I share this to give DHS's response, and for the possibility she is telling the truth.
My original post on X: "This makes NO SENSE. A 13-year-old was arrested by local police for unknown reasons, and then turned over to ICE, which is detaining him far away from his mother — who is going through immigration court, has an asylum application on file, and is legally authorized to work." Underneath that I posted a link to the opening paragraphs of the article and the headline.

In response, DHS Spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin, @TriciaOhio, wrote: "Here are the facts: he posed a public safety threat with an extensive rap sheet including violent assault with a dangerous weapon, battery, breaking and entering, destruction of property. He was in possession of a firearm and 5-7 inch knife when arrested."

This work is really important. I see the language in the 2nd ad all the time — “you’re not alone.”

But the subtext is: “You’re absolutely alone."

Whatever this “Crimson” organization is offering, it DEPENDS on you feeling alone.

That’s what makes it predatory.

Just a reminder that Wikipedia is the only remaining reliable source of information that right wing billionaires can't control. (Although they'll never stop trying.)

My best organizing tip for academic workers (& all workers, but academics esp. can struggle to internalize this IME) is to go to campus workers with less power than you as the *first* step of any campaign. Going to deans etc w/ more power cedes your own power to the boss & shrinks your coalition.

The real news in this is the first sentence. “It is not exactly clear what UNC plans to use the faculty workload report for…”

I would argue that it is very clear. I have, in fact, argued that it is very clear.

Yes, the government is spying on you. Yes, it is openly, brazenly violating our rights. Are you gonna do something about it, or are you just gonna roll over and let them swallow us into their new digital police state?

remembering when Obama ordered the extrajudicial murder via drone strike of an American citizen & his 16yo American citizen son in Yemen. the imperial boomerang has & will continue to swing back & the exceptionalism that has us crowing that we are too civilized for all that will not protect anyone.

Posting obliquely, but:

... is it "terrorism" if it's state-sanctioned? This is classic imperial boomerang.

We actually know a lot about what happens when conservatives embargo ideas at public universities.

In the 1920s, they called it "evolution," but conservatives really targeted a broad range of ideas, including modern science but also ideas about racial equality.

What happened back then? A 🧵
The Conservative War on Education That Failed
A full century ago, the most effective school-ban campaign in American history set the pattern: noise, fury, rancor, and fear, but not much change in what schools actually teach.

Some 200 teachers who took jobs with DCPS under the expectation that the school system would sponsor a green card are now facing uncertain futures.

Even after the D.C. Council set aside additional funds for the program, DCPS says it won’t spend the money, @maustermuhle.bsky.social reports:
DCPS promised them green cards. Now, these international teachers have nowhere to turn.
More than 200 teachers may soon have to leave the country because of what they say are broken promises from the city's school system.

I think what’s most frustrating right now for Black and Indigneous people is waiting for the bulk of white folks to catch up.

At some point the “this isn’t who we are” and “I didn’t have this on my bingo card” has to end and y’all will catch up, right? RIGHT?

WE NEED YOU TO CATCH UP.

Consider the added cruelty of Medicaid work requirements (to be implemented in all US states starting in January 2027; previously implemented in AR & GA, resulting in coverage losses)-- on top of the possibility of having your wages garnished for bills that should have been paid by Medicaid.
