You don't have to judge Columbus by the standards of today. His tenure as governor of Hispaniola was so horrific that he was dragged back to Spain in chains to answer for his many crimes.

Plus he never set foot on any land that would ever be a part of the United States of America.

“Maybe the intelligence we most need is the capacity to see beyond the hierarchies that determine which knowledge counts. Without that foundation, regardless of the hundreds of billions we pour into developing superintelligence, we’ll keep erasing knowledge systems that took generations to develop.”

Sweeping layoffs announced by the Trump administration landed another body blow to the U.S. Department of Education, this time gutting the office responsible for making sure states provide special education services to the nation's 7.5 million children with disabilities.

Great reconsideration of beloved American film wh/ gifted women the terms “high/low maintenance.” Occurs to me, theory as such is “high maintenance:” never satisfied with what’s offered, putting the sauce on the side, thinking harder about what presents as “obvious”, always (re) considering.
The Quiet Cruelty of 'When Harry Met Sally'
The classic rom-com invented the “high-maintenance” woman. Thirty years later, its reductive diagnosis lives on.

Public services around care work cannot — CANNOT — continue to be run on a for-profit basis for the simple reason that the business of business is business.

The most reliable route to profit is essentially scamming the gov't while betraying the vulnerable.

Every day at noon, no matter how busy, Johny Merida Aguilar left his construction job and hurried to his 5-year-old son's school to feed him. His son has brain cancer and generally only accepts food from his father.

Merida Aguilar was arrested by ICE in September and faces deportation to Bolivia.
He was caring for his 5-year-old son with brain cancer. Then he was detained by ICE.
A court has temporarily blocked Johny Merida Aguilar's deportation to Bolivia.

This work is really important. I see the language in the 2nd ad all the time — “you’re not alone.”

But the subtext is: “You’re absolutely alone."

Whatever this “Crimson” organization is offering, it DEPENDS on you feeling alone.

That’s what makes it predatory.

For many of the tasks where they're being pushed, LLMs' effect on student learning and worker productivity is roughly the same as that of alcohol
maxkennerly.bsky.social
IMHO, LLMs will be an economic negative for years.

They'll do a worse job than humans,

but will still replace humans because they're cheaper for employers,

but really they're costlier, it's just that lots of costs get externalized to society by our horrible energy/tax policies.

Lose-lose-lose.
