In the Humanities, as I see it, extra-dense prose is typically masculine, though since many women also use it, I tend to distinguish between scholars naturally talented for abstraction and those of us who are not. I write clear prose and it's always been a problem in peer reviewing!

Yesterday, in a public interview, a Nobel-prize winner and retired academic told my friend, a scholar constantly promoting his books, that he never reads academic works on his oeuvre. So ungracious! We Literature scholars work hard to enhance the reputation of living writers we love!
