They say a week is a long time in politics, so anything could happen! But if a week is full of opportunities to turn things around it's also full of opportunities to step on more rakes. What exactly has changed about Starmer lately that implies he'll stop stepping on those rakes anytime soon?

I live in the UK and get most of my reading done on public transport, I understand a lot of American cities are impossible to navigate without cars though. I wonder if you can track a correlation with cities like New York having higher literacy rates than LA as well as better public transport?

...yourself, would these heroes of our past accept the genocide in Gaza? If Manchester wants to keep branding itself as a progressive, even radical city, it must stand for such things alongside its sorrow at the attack in Crumpsall. /fin

Had a point to make about the hypocrisy of calling the march for Palestine this weekend 'disrespectful' but thought better. As a Manchester native, go to Lincoln Square and see the statue commemorating the workers who put down tools in cotton factories to damage the slave trade in America and ask/1

your core users are people who have already demonstrated a willingness to abandon a more popular social media site for another, in the most part for disliking the politics of the people who run it. write this on a big whiteboard somewhere in the office

hiiiii here’s a comic i made about having a job and being overwhelmed (1/7)
comic cover!!! featuring the main character, Dina, looking nervous and sweaty. She’s a young woman in an ill-fitting work shirt and pencil skirt with her dark hair tied up in a bun and bangs pinned with a dog-shaped clip. Some sort of ominous shadow looms over her. Text reads: FELT BAD, MET GOD by molly kate young (aka longfusilli) (aka ME!!!!)

Great blog! The point about the Beowulf-esque human culture at the end stood out to me. I feel people just take the assumptions (including how humans should be) of the fantasy meme sphere and operate within it without any curiosity about how it got that way, that it even can or should be different!

From the even-more-occupied state of Magnolia Keep comes a high-octane blogpost about humans! Specifically, how you shouldn't just say "They're humans, they're adaptable and ambitious!" and call it a day.

Through gritted teeth I am forced to hand it to Jude Doyle, who wrote a very good analysis of the ghosts haunting music criticism's past and present. Also apparently we both like EMA.

Any analysis of far right radicalisation in the UK is incomplete without knowing that:
1. The gutter press has been pushing this sentiment for decades longer than Facebook has been a useful tool of recruitment.
2. The points on which these neo-nazis and the press agree TODAY is anti-trans policy.
Inside the everyday Facebook networks where far-right ideas grow
The Guardian spent a year studying an online community trading in anti-immigration sentiment and misinformation. Experts say such spaces can play a role in radicalisation

Transition timelines were inspiring to get started but demoralising to judge myself besides. Talk to the people around and see what they say. Probably could've put it in fewer words to start with 😅

I have pictures of myself but I haven't made a point of putting up a transition timeline because it would upset me, I'm too self-critical. But I have changed, I know because the people who have known me the whole time have seen it. I value my mum saying I seem much happier now the most.

i keep two copies of the same deck in my purse at all times so i can play mirror matches with strangers; i haven't spent any money on the game all year, and might never again. i'm not upset, because life changes. but from purely a curiosity standpoint, how did they ever lose someone as hooked as me?

His Majesty. Postcard from my collection, mailed 1907.
Black and white photo of a fluffy white medium haired cat standing in profile with a worried expression on its adorable face. The words “His Majesty” are written on the bottom of the photo in tiny letters and a bow has been painted on his neck during the photo post-processing.

It is hardly the point but a) trans people existed in Medieval Europe, b) lots of currencies were used in Medieval Europe, not just gold, which was in fact uncommon, c) alchemy was a lot more common in early modern Europe, d) women are not a commodity you absolute weapons????

What it sounds like when philosophers who are also anti-trans activists submit an amicus brief to a US court where they argue for banning trans girls and women from women's sports.

the option of interpreting the Idaho and West Virginia
statutes as motivated by the justified aim of excluding
all males from female sports, it is quite invidious to
interpret them as instead motivated by the unjustified
aim of excluding males who identify as female in par-
ticular.
Consider a simple analogy. Imagine that we are
back in Medieval Europe. Gold is the currency of the
land. Consequently, many merchants prefer to accept
gold and only gold as payment. However, a new move-
ment is afoot, whose members are known as the alche-
mists. The alchemists purport to have found a way of
turning iron pyrite (fool’s gold) into gold. Some people
are convinced by the claims of the alchemists, though
many others are not. This difference in attitudes
starts to lead to time-wasting interactions in which an
alchemist or fellow traveler tries to purchase a good
using iron pyrite from a merchant who, unmoved by
well-publicized insistence on the part of the alche-
mists that only irrational prejudice could lie behind
lingering doubts about the possibility of converting
iron pyrite into gold, continues to insist on only ac-
cepting gold as payment. One such merchant, whose
unofficial working policy has hitherto been to accept
only gold as payment, decides to make his policy offi-
cial by putting up a sign on his store saying, “Only
gold accepted (no iron pyrite!).”
