Nope, no need for more followers, but a worthy follow: the sort of poster who makes esoteric topics fascinating. In this case, fashion, menswear, the clothing industry: not something I am invested in, but I've continued to read his posts, getting intrigued & informed along the way. Worth your time.

Delightful #thread of posts illustrating (in random order), quotes from "A Night in the Lonesome October" by Roger Zelazny. Some people have a tradition of reading one chapter a day this month (there are 31 chapters for the 31 days of October). Me, I think any day is a good day to re-read it.

It's hard to help Americans left behind because so much of US identity is rooted in individualism. The average American conservative holds all three positions at once:

— Virtue signals about supporting US manufacturing
— Against raising the minimum wage
— Buys foreign imports because they're cheap
HardPass4 on Twitter tweets: "I'm willing to pay more for quality products if they are made in America, by Americans, who are paid a decent income." The tweet shows Norman Rockwell's "Freedom of Speech" painting, which is often used to show the tweeter is expressing a brave opinion. HardPass4 on Twitter tweets: "MINIMUM WAGE JOBS WERE NOT MEANT TO BE A CAREER. Why does no one understand this? Entry level jobs are STEPPING STONES to better jobs. No one wants to work towards that though." HardPass4 on Twitter tweets: "Buy $5 gloves instead of $50 ones. Trust me." The tweet shows a box of "Gorilla Grip" gloves. The label on Gorilla Grip gloves show they're made in China.

For me, the emotional fatigue was real. And even though I supported it, Auckland having to go into yet another lockdown while the rest of the country didn't, was hard.

Doesn't help of course that all the Covid post-mortems have been 'WHY DIDN'T THEY PSYCHICALLY KNOW THE EXACT THINGS TO DO AND MOMENTS TO DO THEM' and not 'Wow that was a really dangerous and uncertain time and they had to try and make decisions based on the information they had'

The solutions proposed for New Zealand's (and virtually every other country's) problems are always like:
"We need to make people work for more years"
"We have to cut back on services, I'm sorry, there is just no other way"
"We have to cut benefits for young people"

never:
"We need to tax the rich"

Overheating urban areas are back in the spotlight, and the reason is clear: a lack of greenery, particularly trees.

The 3-30-300 handbook serves as a practical guide for cities and urban areas to address this issue by keeping their environments cool,

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

This review gets to something that I've found hard to explain.

After my husband died suddenly last November, it seemed odd that the TV show that helped me get through the holidays was Slow Horses, which I hadn't yet watched. I watched the 1st four seasons twice & they kinda saved my life. 🧵

I love "Slow Horses". The linked article says Diana Taverner is played by "Kristin Hot Thomas". *Golf clap* No notes.

(It's a show chockful of cliche characters, but the writing & chemistry makes it fly.)

Govt to cut #JobSeeker benefit for 18 & 19 year olds who’s parents earn over $65,000, even if the teens have a disability or health condition. With #CostOfLiving & the job shortage they’re cranking up stress levels to 11, all to meet a target.
My #cartoon today about hard-nosed #NZpol
Cartoon. Title: “Job Seeee-e-e-e” Image shows PM Christopher Luxon at the open hatch of a small plane, high above farmland. He’s leaning out, and holding up a parachute pack, labelled “Job Seeker” He’s calling out to someone falling from the plane, “And I’ve kept your parachute because you kids from low-income homes need some motivation” Then he adds, “Don’t let that disability slow you down!”
