Like looking at things strategically, the main thing that any of us should be concerned with right now isn't fighting back, it's making sure we stay alive.

Theoretically, that's easier with an organized community, but y'know, takes two to tango and all that. If we don't actually organize, well...
sovereignbeast.bsky.social
Now, as for what 'we' do- well, we're still in the position where we're generally not organized or prepared to resist fascist violence against us, so either we actually do that organization or I guess we passively hope the fascists burn out with a fizzle before they actually start murdering us?

In other words, if the Democrats let Republicans hunt trans people for sport, and this destroys the Democrat base as a coherent voting bloc capable of electoral victory, the oil companies still don't have to worry about Democrats passing green legislation that costs them money.
sovereignbeast.bsky.social
What we have to understand is that while the obvious motivation of having people focus on something other than themselves is a real and pressing motivation for these oil companies, if people 'see the trick' and 'refuse to engage,' they're also happy to let that splinter their opposition for them.
sovereignbeast.bsky.social
Supporting anti-trans campaigns, therefore, gives you multiple benefits. The anti-trans campaigners are already on your side, but this ties them to you more closely; ties between the trans community and your opposition (leftists, anarchists, etc) means hurting trans people hurts the left; etc, etc.
sovereignbeast.bsky.social
You ALSO have a major issue looming in the background, in the form of climate change. You know very well that it's going to be a problem, but addressing the problem is going to lose you money, so you don't want to- and you don't want to be pressured into having to address it, whatever that means.
sovereignbeast.bsky.social
Well, look at it this way: You're an oil exec. You know that a lot of your most extreme opposition comes from political radicals on the left, and most of your support comes from conservatives.

Your fortunes, therefore, are dependent on keeping conservatives strong and 'the left' weak.

It takes time; you can probably cover the basics of a language in a day if you sit down and run through a codecademy course but the core part of coding isn't really the language so much as learning how to break apart problems and solve them, which seems to more or less be a matter of experience.

Or what if we just normalized having zero respect for America

Hey, you idiotic propagandists at the New York Post:

God Bless America isn't the national anthem. It's a SHOW TUNE written by Irving Berlin.

Similarly, this attempt to 'distract' the public is not just empty bluster. It is a real threat, and if it is not addressed it will harm countless people, and enable reactionary forces to further develop their position.

If you ignore the threat your enemy poses, they will act on your vulnerability.
sovereignbeast.bsky.social
If an enemy is threatening to take your knight, that threat to your knight isn't fake; you either address the vulnerability, or your knight gets captured. If addressing it creates another vulnerability that they can capitalize on, your enemy will do so- but that doesn't mean the threat wasn't real.
sovereignbeast.bsky.social
A concerning number of people are interpreting this as 'oh so identity politics IS a distraction!' and, to be quite blunt, each and every one of you need remedial chess lessons; something can be intended to draw attention away from something else, and also a real problem which needs to be addressed.

It's pretty wild to me that investigators have uncovered that anti-trans campaigns are largely funded by the fossil fuel industry, and that the presumed motivations are pretty directly to redirect the public conversation away from climate change... and that this isn't bigger news.
sovereignbeast.bsky.social
Republicans trying to scaremonger about Democrats doing stuff that is more or less totally reasonable, but which Democrats would never do because it would make Republicans salty if they did, is always so weird to come across ngl lol

Thune: "If the Democrats had won the majority, they probably would've tried to nuke the filibuster. And then you'd have four new senators from Puerto Rico and DC, you'd have a packed Supreme Court, you'd have abortion on demand ... "

this, fyi, is why we keep insisting that you can care about more than one thing.

Fight transphobia.

Don't stop fighting climate change.

Abolish ICE.

Be antiracist.

Support your community.

Demand safety for Palestinians.

We can and must fight for all of it.

what about those of us who wanted to go on a multiple year martial arts journey and returned with a 'curse' that turned us into a girl? there's probably at least three of us.

I mean, at least if you play the lottery, you have a real chance of winning something.
sovereignbeast.bsky.social
It's wild that everyone knows the current investment in datacenters for 'AI' is a bubble but they still keep investing in it because 'it's a gamble and if AGI is achieved it will pay off'.

I'd compare it to playing the lottery, but playing the lottery may be a better investment.

To contextualize just how old Ugarit was when the city was abandoned, imagine if Uruk (from the Epic of Gilgamesh) was still around today.

No state, no kingdom, and no empire has existed a tenth as long as that city did.
mel.bzky.team
fun fact about the crushing weight of human history: the city of Ugarit was abandoned ~3000 years ago. previously to this, it was continually inhabited for >7000 years. and the people who settled it would have ALSO understood themselves as the inheritors to a history that is now totally lost to us

fun fact: the more people who buy this frog costume, the harder it is for the feds to track down who wore it to a protest.

And, you know, it IS halloween soon...

'Listen, these people with their peace prizes, they're really very sad- they don't know what they're doing, they just do whatever ANTIFA tells them to do- so you can't even be mad at them. But you know, we can do it better, we can make a better prize, and everyone will want it, just wait and see."
sovereignbeast.bsky.social
ok but how long do we think it's gonna take for Trump to go 'I didn't want the Nobel Peace Prize anyway, I'm making a new prize- the best prize, really- and calling it the Noble War Prize' or something like that
sovereignbeast.bsky.social
I think democrats are genuinely unprepared for an administration which treats them the same as actual leftist groups, much less the way that's going to radicalize their base.
