Speaking from experience, small indie publishing is getting tougher. We usually rely on project-based public funding (too much) and are a couple of rejections away from closure. Investors balk at us because of the low margins & growth. We need a new path.

the lesson? sometimes it's worth setting yourself a laughably unrealistic goal, because even if you fail in the broader sense, there might be some success buried in there too

realistically it wasn't going to be feasible. but I had a crack at it anyway, and I've managed a bit over 3,000 words since yesterday. keen mathematicians will note that that isn't quite 30,000. BUT! it is slightly over 3,000 words that I might not have had otherwise. and some of them are even okay!

I've had a novella in progress for a while, sort of stalled around 5K words. saw yesterday that Wild Hunt books have a short submission window open for novellas from unagented writers, and had the frankly ludicrous notion that I could write (and edit and submit) 30,000 words by Sunday...
