This thread is absolutely spot-on, I used to sell these guys their Larry Niven or Robert Anton Wilson novels (or comic books/Locus/StarLogs) in my youth in the book/comic trade and these were the customers you Did Not Engage with. The crackpot theories about "when/if I'M in charge" leaked out 24/7.

Thinking about this, I’ll quibble: far too many of the people who become retired engineers were like that as high school freshmen. Engineering school and subsequent employment allows the goofy to percolate, so by the time they retire, they’ve been in feedback loops for decades.

Think about how for decades, one of the ingredients of a crackpot was: retired engineer.

Retired engineers, for *generations* have been a fertile ground for crackpot theories in everything.

They get that golden watch and bam, incoherent manifesto about quantum archeology inbound.

For that group who enjoys both One Piece and Watchmen, I present probably one of the best takes on both properties.

thiel, man, what the fuck are you talking about

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.

short but thrilling ride today serves to remind us all that these things are TV shows that were watched by literal millions and millions of people, there are fans everywhere, and no, they don't all know each other. Fandom is a thing no one person or club or gang is in charge of.

Things just fell off a “WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON” cliff

Elites??
There's a clique of old-guard fans, largely based in and around Canada, who have gradually seized control of every major online hub dedicated to discussing Sailor Moon. Including, as of 2025, this very sub. One in particular, the woman behind Sos pop tarts and the old Moon Chase blog, holds her own little Con in Toronto. Maybe you know her?
She uses Mafia tactics (which she calls
"quality control") to lord over her edge and actively leverages her connections with the DiC voice actors to intimidate others wishing to hold events in the Toronto region. She also purportedly killed International Sailor Moon Day celebrations around the world via publicly dragging/libeling event admins and also denouncing any events that didn't submit applications through her directly. Literal power madness.

There was a whole article about these

There was a whole article about these incidents a few years ago. It included some leaked emails that were fucking surreal, to say the least. I will have to find it again. Suffice to say though, 1 am SO SICK of the policing within this fandom.
So I say once again, why can't they say their piece? You have been writing scholarly SM elated essays for years. If folks here want to express their own side opinions/tangents now and then, then BY GAWD let them.

also extra ghoulish, considering how the last years of Stan Lee's life were spent being abused, neglected, and taken advantage of by pretty much everyone around him. Even in death he's an ATM to these people

the ghoulish part isn't the autopen, the ghoulish part is using it to sign the name of a dead man and then pretending it's some sort of precious fandom love artifact

just to add my two cents about physical media - your favorite website, streamer, or online archive could vanish tomorrow due to any number of deliberate or accidental actions on the part of any number of people or organizations. Physical media? You have to destroy it YOURSELF

Counting just DVDs and up – not VHS or digital purchases – I have 493 movies and TV shows on physical home video.

I'm not saying you should be where I'm at. But I am arguing you should consider getting closer.
