Can you imagine how many threads and tiktoks there'd be about Empire Records if it came out today?

Something specific that I am nostalgic about is the scent of Herbal Essences shampoo in the 90s. It doesn’t smell like that anymore and I use different products now but every so often I remember uncapping the bottle and taking a big whiff.

It really does feel like some people are unable to even interact with any criticism of AI, and thus are unable to grapple with it at all in a useful way.

It’s wild because librarians are supposed to think critically about this stuff because we are taught to! And yet!

Being a part of so many listservs advertising AI webinars that don’t even mention any of the ethical issues with AI is a real trip.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

"The chatbot struggled to correctly answer questions about books . . ."

This would be hilarious if it weren't for the fact that the authors, and many library administrators, weren't still insistent that chatbots are something libraries should implement. 📚

Outside of buying direct: if you're buying ebooks, google play pays authors the best royalties. If you're buying paperback, Amazon is probably the highest. If you're buying audiobooks, anywhere but Amazon or audible if it's available pay the highest.

All the discourse around readers boycotting Amazon and supporting small bookstores seems to be missing an important point: supporting authors. The people who actually create the books that stores of all sizes are profiting off of. #booksky

Recently read the Monk and Robot duology by Becky Chambers and found it to be quite delightful.

Help I have a lot of friends who are Swifties and I’m very lukewarm on this new album. Do I tell them? They’ll want to know! But they won’t like my answer.

Covid is a social justice issue.

Mitigations like masks, anti virals, air purifiers and tests cost money.

We should have free respirators in public places. Mandatory masking in hospitals. Clean air benchmarks. Paid time off.

Those steps would drastically reduce spread.

My love language is looking up the weather and telling you when you it’s going to rain. It’s knowing that it’ll get cold later, so you should bring a sweater. It’s sharing the forecast so you’re not caught unawares.

These AI slop dictionaries are really out here teaching me new words right in their title! Side note, is vetenarian similar to veterinarians or?
A screenshot from Chapters website with three obvious generative AI 'dictionaries' for vets that misspell the word veterinarian in their titles.

A tactic that has worked to get young teens interested in coming to the library has been to tell them that my library is a Pokémon Go gym and to challenge them to come knock me out of it.

As ever, I will remind folks that the last federally funded residential school closed in 1997. It's not just survivors who are alive to this day, there are staff members who are only in their 60s.
None of this is vague "ancient history".

Canada Post and the library go hand in hand. They deliver our interlibrary and out of province book loans for us at a reduced book rate. If we lose them what does that mean for shipping cost? Will it be passed on to patrons?

the post office is a public service. it doesn’t need to make money. public transit doesn’t need to make money. the library doesn’t need to make money. some things exist for the public good and we desperately need lawmakers to stop thinking about them in terms of capitalism. these are not businesses.
